Hi!
This is the construction report of my mid-production Tiger I from Heng Long. This was my first RC-Tank and I had already build it to the mid-production, but haven’t finished it yet because I wanted to drive a little bit with it. I bought it nearly one year ago and so it wasn’t with sound & smoke, sadly. Now, as its getting colder and darker outside, I decided to overwork it from scratch. I will make a complete construction report as time goes by. This picture shows my Tiger before I started to re-build it.

I had removed the Feiffel-device, had added some new tools (the original HL’s looked terrible), added a fire-extinguisher and fitted a commander-copula from the Tamiya-King Tiger. This picture shows my Tiger opened where I had placed the on/off-switch in the rear panel of the tiger and had added a sound-module from Conrad. Well, you can save your money, this “sound-generator” sounds like a firing machine-gun and not like a tank-engine. But for only 15 bucks, I thought it was a good deal (until the sound & smoke-Tigers appeared here in Germany). This “thing” will be kicked-out when I receive the sound & smoke-kit next month.

This picture shows the on/off-switch I had mounted in the rear panel of the HL. You also can see that I had filled-up the road-wheels with resin so that they are more loadable. I will place the switch in the loader’s hatch together with the switch for starting the smoking-device and the connecting-plug for the charging-function of the accumulator.

This shows how I had used my Dremel to cut-off the first side of the battery-compartment.

All switches have been removed and the holes will be closed with plastic-sheet.

I decided to add a Zimmerit-coating, but I didn’t want to use putty or Milliput. So I looked around at Ebay and found modelling clay. Well, 500g only wasted 3 bucks, this is much cheaper than Milliput. And you can work with it for nearly 40 minutes until it starts to get dry. It’s cheap, and you can easily form it to whatever you want. I used a 0,3mm thick and 7mm broad piece of plastic-sheet to press the Zimmerit-structure into the clay. But before this, I had to had to fix the clay with double-sided tape because the clay wouldn’t fix with the surface of the front.

I think it looks quite good, as it is my first self-made Zimmerit.

The spare-tracks were removed and the surface was roughened with sand-paper. Ready for Zimmerit!

But first, I added the Zimmerit at the front of the Tiger. Lots of work, and you wouldn’t see much of it later when the spare-tracks will be added again…
Now it was time to add the Zimmerit to both sides of the turret. While the modelling clay needed its time to get dry, I cutted the gun barrel into two pieces and removed the piece that was too short. I used a pipe made of aluminium with a diameter of 14mm and a total length of about 60mm. Well, its too long, you will say. You’re right, but I forced about 8mm of it into the gun mantlet. So it’s now stuck with it. This should be stable enough.

Well, that’s all for now, but I will continue with my report, of course. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to contact me…
Greetings Sascha

Sascha, Hi. What is: "the Feiffel-device" you mention that you removed? And also what did you do to the road wheels? You say you filled them up with resin, do you mean in order to make them weight more? Do you know what the cast resin roadwheels from Chief at Imperial-modellbau are like?
regards

Hi!
The Feiffel-device consisted of the two sets of air-cleaners. They were mounted at the backside of the tank, one to the left and one to the right. The mid & late-production Tigers didn't have these any more.
I have marked the device on the picture above. The tubes were also removed. I filled the road-wheels because they are hollow, and when you paint them in sandyellow, you can see the hollow wheels when you look at the side-view of the tank. And by the way, they are more stable. This thin piece of plastic didn't look much loadable to me, but I may be wrong. Yep, I know ImperialChief. He's also a member of our board. But they are made of tin now. He has removed the wheels from his list because he has serious problems with them (they don't rotate roundly) and he is going to look for a better conclusion to cast these parts.
Hope I could help you!
Greetings Sascha

The Feiffel-deyice means the airfilters on the backsite of the Tiger I. The lateproduktion TigerI dont have this kind of filters.
To late!!!!!!

Hi there! I have continued to build my mid-production Tiger in the last few days and I think its worth an udpate. I have added the Zimmerit to the gun mantlet and the side-panels of the hull. The rear plate still has to receive the Zimmerit, and I think about to add it to the drive area although you won’t see much of it later when the road-wheels are mounted. Still much of work to do, but I decided to give the body a primer coat of paint because I just wanted to look how the Zimmerit would look like. And after that, I noticed that some areas of the Zimmerit-coating still have to be re-edited.

I still have to drill the two holes for the gunner’s view sights.

Hi guys!
Time for a big update!!!
I had to cut the lower turret part into several pieces due to the fact that it had to receive the Zimmerit coating in one piece. Now the turret could get a new coating in one piece with no cutting edges.
Zimmerit added to the rear plate.
The turret with the 2 lower parts glued to it. It has now received a new Zimmerit coating in one piece now. The small thing is my tool with which I made the Zimmerit. Unfortunately, I got the idea to make this tool when I had already done the complete hull....
The turret painted. Not finished yet!
The Kwk with Zimmerit showing the fine details.
The view onto the bottom side of the turret showing where I cut the lower part into pieces.

Update part 2:
The front plate with only one headlight. It's from our ImperialChief. The holder is made of 0,5mm styrene and the wire is made of copper (not functional!). The hardwood-block is also made of myself.
hometown.aol.de/WdyWdpckr5/Tiger+Restauration/22.JPG The rear side of the tank. Black washing alread applied as like on the other pictures.
Side view. Looking somewhat strange with the four wheels only??
The overworked turret with the air intake now correctly mounted. Also the periskope for the loader added.
 The front again!
Greetings Sascha

my next little update:
This is my special method for weathering a model. The picture shows the difference between aging and non-aging. I used some light-gray piece of chalk which I had hackled to a fine powder. I applied it with a huge brush and then sealed it with clear varnish. This shows the gun barrel after sealing.
This shows the turret with the chalk applied but not sealed.

Hallo Sascha,
I really like your tiger I very much !

Very useful explanation how to do it !
Have you ever thought about building the 8,8 with a backstroke ?
Greetings,
Stern
