Yash Chopra
Die Nummer 1 in Bollywood
Nachdem Yash Chopra einige Zeit als Regieassistent für seinen Bruder B.R. Chopra gearbeitet hatte, drehte er 1959 seinen ersten Film Dhool Ka Phool. 1970 gründete er seine eigene Produktionsfirma Yash Raj Films.
Yash Chopra ist mittlerweile der erfolgreichste Filmemacher Indiens und seit Jahrzehnten sowohl als Regisseur als auch als Produzent richtungsweisend für das Bollywood-Kino. Bereits 50 Jahre ist er im Geschäft, bricht mit seinen Filmen Rekorde und schreibt Filmgeschichte.
Unter anderem ist es ihm zuzuschreiben, dass Inder heute mit Vorliebe ihre Tanzszenen in der Schweiz drehen. Nach sieben Jahren Regie-Abstinenz legte er 2004 mit Veer und Zaara sein lang erwartetes episches Liebesdrama vor und erzielte erneut einen finanziellen und künstlerischen Erfolg nicht nur in Indien, sondern auch in den USA und Großbritannien.
2004 war insgesamt ein erfolgreiches Jahr für Yash Chopra. Mit den Filmen Hum Tum , Dhoom und Veer und Zaara produzierte seine Firma Yash Raj Films gleich drei Blockbuster hintereinander.
Yash Chopras ältester Sohn Aditya Chopra ist ebenfalls Regisseur und ist für die Bollywood-Hits Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) und Mohabbatein (2000) verantwortlich. Sein jüngerer Sohn Uday Chopra ist Schauspieler (zu sehen in Mohabbatein und Mujhse Dosti Karoge ). Yash Chopras älterer Bruder B.R. Chopra war lange Zeit Produzent und hat mittlerweile auch als Regisseur Erfolg ( Baghban , 2003).
Veer und Zaara ist für Yash Chopra einer seiner persönlichsten Filme.
Mit 72 Jahren wandte er sich erstmals so offen einem nationalen und ganz eigenen Trauma zu: der Teilung von Indien und Pakistan im Jahre 1947. Yash Chopra selbst wurde im heute pakistanischen Teil des Punjabs geboren und ist seit seiner Kindheit nie wieder dort gewesen.
