I have no problems playing PS1 games in Vista and today (June 30) microsoft closes XP support. So I recommend Vista. Well, actually, Linux is better of course

P.S. Upgrade your video card before installing Vista! It won't work with TNT2!

Since they knew the mess made with Vista, the Windows XP support period was extended a while ago.

Info schrieb
    Support lifecycle

Support for Windows XP without a service pack ended on September 30, 2004 and support for Windows XP Service Pack 1 and 1a ended on October 10, 2006.

Windows XP Service Pack 2 will be retired on July 13, 2010, almost six years after its general availability. As per Microsoft's posted timetable, the company will stop general licensing of Windows XP to OEMs and terminate retail sales of the operating system on June 30, 2008, 17 months after the release of Windows Vista. However, an exception was announced on April 3, 2008, for OEMs installing to subnotebooks or UMPCs either until June 30, 2010, or one year after the availability of the next client version of Windows, code-named Windows 7 — whichever date comes later.

On April 14, 2009, Windows XP will begin its "Extended Support" period that will last for 5 years until April 8, 2014.

If going to upgrade the computer and update the OS, I suggest to wait for Windows 7. Windows XP is a lot better than Vista. For gamers, the main excuse would be Dx10 (wich OpenGL can do the same, and in XP too) to play new games (and you'll lose all DSound HW acceleration).

I agree with The_Source, Linux FTW! =P

If you hadn't activated your copy of windows in time, you can't configure network now. Activation program can attempt to use DHCP via ethernet, but no more. If you have the connection that requires manual configuration, you can't do anything now but reinstall windows.
