Uruguay to host first South American Beach Games in 2009

Uruguay will host in the summer of 2009 the first South American Beach Games, which will include various sports on the sand and sea, authorities said Friday.

Representatives of the south American Council of Sports (CONSUDE), the Uruguayan Olympic Committee (COU) and local governments met Friday in Montevideo to "adjust details" of the Games, Sports Minister Hector Lescano said.

Lescano told press that to organize the season games is "a great challenge" for being "the first games in this specialty."

"Uruguay has had the honor of being chosen among many proposed to host this event" that its date will be confirmed between February and March, Lascano said.

South American Beach Games has confirmed soccer, volleyball, handball, surf, swimming and rowing competitions.

The competitions will be conducted in Montevideo and Maldonado in the coasts of Rio de la Plata and the Atlantic Ocean.
