The United States of America supports the territorial integrity of Georgia and the settlement of its territorial disputes within its internationally recognized borders. We have raised our concerns with other nations who are friends to the Georgian nation.
The United States regrets Russia’s decision to withdraw unilaterally from the CIS sanctions on Abkhazia. We do not see how it contributes to stability in the South Caucasus’s, resolution of Abkhazian conflict, or improvement of Russian and Georgian relations. We lament that Russia is not working through the UN and the friends group. It is our hope that Russia would play a constructive role in the region, helping resolve the conflict through peaceful means and consistent with Georgia’s territorial integrity.
We commend Georgia for not falling victim to provocations and behaving with restraint. We support Georgia’s future as a member of the transatlantic community. Georgia is not alone. We have great hope in the Georgians and the Abkhaz people. We believe that all affairs and differences between the parties will be resolved in a reasonable time being.
The United States of America supports the extension of the UNOMIG, to continue to observe and verify compliance with the ceasefire agreement between the Government of Georgia and the Abkhaz authorities. We are committed and will continue to extend all assistance in the issue.
