Teddy Bishop shares History of 'Miss You'

“That was an interesting session because that song was originally written for Ginuwine. We were in the studio and we were playing Aaliyah records. She wanted to hear some of the records Johnta and I had written at the time. We played her a couple of tracks and that particular track happened to kind of pass by. She was like, “Wait a minute, back that up. I want to hear that again!” We played it for her and she was like, “I want to cut this record,” and we were like “Well this is Ginuwine’s record.” She was like, “I don’t care, I want to cut it.” She got on the phone, called him and said “Hey I know you cut this record already, but I would love to cut it”. Ginuwine, because he was a part writer on the song, it benefited him anyway. Plus they came from the same camp. Ginuwine told her to cut it and we cut it on Aaliyah and it went on to be a number one hit. When I first went in to produce that song, the labels didn’t really think it was a hit record. They didn’t. They didn’t think it was a smash record. They bypassed that record a lot. Unfortunately when she passed, it was almost like that passing forced them to put that particular record out because it was symbolically saying “I miss you”. She actually loved the record when we cut it. She loved it. She actually wanted to put it out herself. It took two years for that record to come out after I cut it and it happens like that sometimes. Sometimes you can work on a record in this industry and it might not come out for another 3-4 years then it blows up, but the public would think that you actually did that record at that particular time. It was just an interesting story because I don’t think the label at the time really believed in that record, but they went on and took a chance with it. It blew up. It was number one for a long time on the charts.”

ECHT INTERESSANT!! Einmal mehr, unser Aaliyah-Google!

Ich musste bei dem Teil schmunzeln:

“I want to cut this record,” and we were like “Well this is Ginuwine’s record.” She was like, “I don’t care, I want to cut it.” She got on the phone, called him and said “Hey I know you cut this record already, but I would love to cut it”.

Ich will es, ich will es, ich will es, mir scheissegal, ich will es!!! :D Sooooo süss!!! :D

Missy Elliott speaking on ‘One In A Million’:

“When Timbaland and I worked on Aaliyah’s One In A Million album, I will say that we sat there, looked at each other and said, ‘This is some different shit.’ We were still relatively new as far as being a producer and songwriter. So the fact that Aaliyah allowed us to come in and take over her project was crazy. We were supposed to do just one record, but we ended us doing another one, and another one, and another one. It was exciting because Aaliyah was just as excited and she wasn’t scared. We knew we were working on something different. The rhythm of [the title track alone] was sick. The way I went into writing ‘One In A Million’ was I told Tim, ‘Well, let me give Aaliyah a melody of a ballad that feels just like she could be rapping.’ We felt like it was going to go over people’s head. But we decided to try it. I can’t tell you what Tim was on when it came to some of the beats he was making [laughs]. But the funny thing is Tim has always been that way, even back in the basement days. We were only doing what we had been doing years before people even knew who we were. I had said to Tim, ‘Let’s give Aaliyah the sound we had in the basement days.’ Because Tim used to put helicopters and different animal sounds on his records. Any animal on the planet he would put it on a record. He was like, “Okay, let’s try some crickets…’ He was always creative like that. Aaliyah was the easiest person to work with. She was one of the fastest artists in the studio. I would do a reference track and we would leave and not even be gone for more than 20 minutes, and she would be like, ‘I’m done.’ She was always happy and she always wanted to make sure her vocals were right. Aaliyah was a perfectionist who happened to record in the studio quickly. That was a rare thing. When Aaliyah danced in the studio when a record came on we knew it was a hit. I remember her dancing to ‘One In A Million.’ I remember her dancing to ‘If Your Girl Only Knew’ and ‘Hot Like Fire.’ If Aaliyah got to moving, we knew that was it.”
