All I Need
explained by Sharon den Adel
This song has been written from the point of view of someone
who has been disappointed in love and life. A person who has found something or someone he wants to believe in again. At the same time he knows that he won't be able to deal with a new disappointment. He's afraid of giving into the temptation of wanting to believe, because if it does backfire again he's not sure wh at he's going to do.
I don't know why this songtext turned out to be on this subject. Sometimes lyrics just go into a certain direction and others are written with a subject in mind from the start. All I know is that this text became a lot more real to me when a friend of the family committed suieide this year. We knew he was going through a rough dme. The last time Robert and I saw hirn we realized that he had reached the point where he would either break, or he would have to dramatically change his view on life and his future. More than two years passed, and nothing really changed, until we were on tour this year. He'd had some bad news, and that was just one disappointment too many.
When I was 10 or 11 years old, he took me to a friend who had moved from my hometown all the way to loure in Friesland, which lies way up in the north of the country. It's about a 2-3 hour's drive from where I live, and for us Dutch people that's a lotbecause we're not used to driving for too many hours in a row. Friesland, which is 1 of 12 Dutch provinces, has its own dialect and in the past the Frisians actually said they wanted to be independent from the rest of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Our friend was a Frisian, and he bought me a fake Frisian passport I can remember it had all kinds of info about Friesland and it provided discount at, for instance, museums, stores and cinemas. This immediately broke the ice. Although I'd known hirn for as long as I could remember - I was bit shy back then. I only saw hirn when he was in the country, when he had to work in my hometown with my dad. He lived in Indonesia where he'd married and had a fa m ily, but whenever he was in Holland he stayed at my grandma's place, where he would rent a room. When he gave me the passport he said: "As this will be your first time in Friesland, I won't be able to take you with me unless you have a Frisian passport..." LOL. He was this really big guy, who was not much of a talker, but the fact that I was shy made hirn talk the whole trip long. He told me all kinds of things about the eities we passed, the environment a!1d about his beautiful Friesland. He treated me like a grown-up, w,hich was really good for my selfesteern. It was a great start of the weekend. I had forgotten about this trip, but when things like this happen, you start to remember many things you'd forgotten about along the way. I still have that passport and 1'11 always have my memories. He really was a good guy. Rest in peace.

Die Story hinter "All I need" fand ich auch sehr berührend. Was die anderen Songs angeht. "The truth beneath the rose" ist an den Film "Da Vinci Code" angeleht würd ich sagen. "What have you done ?" wurde schon erklärt: aus tiefer Liebe wird Feindschaft. "The Cross" wird schon schwieriger.

Diesmal >>>>>>
"Hand Of Sorrow"
explained by Sharon den Adel
The lyrics of 'The Hand of Sorrow' were inspired by Robin Hobb's 'The Farseer Trilogy', which tells the tale of Fitz Chivalry Farseer. The part that inspired us was the feeling of being torn between your own dreams and higher goals in life as well as the sacrifiees made to achieve them. Other themes that keep being repeated throughout the story are moral issues like the question whether violence is appropriate, when it can prevent more violence.
If you're interested in the Trilogy you can find a summary below;
The Farseer Trilogy
Assassin's Apprentiee 1995
Royal Assassin 1996
Assassin's Quest 1997
The first Robin Hobb Trilogy, The Farseer Trilogy, took place in the Six Duchies. It is the tale of Fitz Chivalry Farseer. The discovery that this bastard son exists is enough to topple Prinee Chivalry's ambition for the throne. He abdicates, ceding the title of heir to the throne to his younger brother Verity and abandoning the child to the care of the stable master Burrich. The youngest prince, Regal, has ambitions of his own, and wishes to do away with the bastard. But old King Shrewd sees the value of taking the lad and training him as an assassin. For a bastard can be sent into dangers where a true-born son could not be risked, and may be given tasks that would soil an heir's hands.
And so, Fitz Chivalry is trained in the secret arts of being a royal assassin. He shows a predilection for the Wit, a beast magic much despised in the Six Duchies. This secret vice in the young assassin is tolerated, for a partnership with an animal may be a useful trait in an assassin. When it is discovered that he may possess the hereditary magic of the Farseers, the Skill, he becomes both the King's weapon, and an obstacle to Prince Regal's ambitions for the throne. At a time when the rivalry for the throne is intense, and the Outislanders and their Red Ship raiders are bringing war to the Six Duchies, Fitz Chivalry discovers that the fate of the kingdom may very well rest on the actions of a young bastard and the King's Fool. Armed with little more than loyalty and his sporadic talent for the old magic, Fitz follows the fading trail of King Verity who has travelled beyond the Mountain Kingdom and into the realm of the legendary Elderlings in what may be a vain hope to renew an old alliance.
