I guess mr. Bernert could help you out since it's known he owns a new nVidia card.
Don't know if he has linux installed.

Buying a AMD card would prolly solve your problems. Yes. Buy a radeon and the shaders might work under linux.

Indeed a great reason to change my GeForce 8800 GTX to Radeon . I wanted to use your AA shader but I guess I'll wait until Pete adds render-to-texture AA to his plugin.

Maybe you have to update your drivers because newest cards are not suported by old/default drivers

No. I always use the latest drivers and they do support my card.

I do have an ATI card with the latest drivers and external shaders won't work for me either, here's the log when I run epsxe from a terminal window:
