Pete Doherty: 'I'm not sure about complete abstinence'

Babyshambles leader speaks about drugs and rehab

Pete Doherty has talked about his recent stint in drug rehab and his current drug intake today (October 12), describing himself as "healthy, physically".

Speaking on BBC 6Music, the Babyshambles frontman revealed that he was only allowed access to his guitar twice a week for an hour at a time.

"I'm healthy, physically, a bit wobbly," he told Steve Lamacq. "I'm not sure about complete abstinence [from drugs]. But it's a 12 step philosophy. It's one day at a time I suppose."

Doherty went on to talk about the psychological assessments he received in rehab.

"Apparently I've got loads of self-esteem issues," he said, before joking: "I thought I was alright!"

Doherty then spoke about the troubled recording sessions his band experienced with producer Stephen Street, revealing that Street told the band that "if you carry on like this, I'm going home", referring to Doherty's drug intake during recording sessions.

"It's important to have someone who knew what he wanted," Doherty added. "We worked 11 to eight with no weekends. It was a contradiction to how we would have chosen to work."

Doherty also debuted a new song during the interview called '1939 Returning', which he had started writing two days earlier. He said that the song was inspired by a dream he had, in which he was washing the windows of an Italian 1930s butchers.

The lyrics of the song included the lines: "Tread carefully upon the drifting lights/When you're behind enemy lines/Caught behind enemy lines in 1939/For Germany he sacrificed his life".

Doherty also played an acoustic cover of Culture Club's 'Karma Chameleon' and admitted that he was hoping to see his favourite football team Queens Park Rangers play again soon.

"Last time I went the club secretary threatened to resign and I had to leave at half time," he explained, adding that after his rehab he hoped to be allowed back declaring, "it's all different now."

Thanks so much to lovely FDWs who pm-ed me with info on tonight's Bristol gig. Managed to get there, and delighted to see Adam appear about an hour before Shambles scheduled to go on. They appeared on time, and were tight as could be. Pete was in amazingly good form, looking great and singing better. Short and sweet, but well worth the effort to get there.

seh ich nicht ganz so...drew und und so labern die ganze zeit von wegen "diesmal schafft er es" und bla bla bla....
pete dagegen, der wirklich in dem körper steckt sagt halt, dass er sich nicht komplett sicher ist was das fernhalten von drogen angeht.....er weiß wie schwer das ist und er allein weiß um seinen zustand.....und wer jahrelang sowas von abhängig war, wird wissen, wie hart das ist...
finde ich in ordnung die aussage...

POP star Pete Doherty's stay in Marlborough has coincided with a significant period in his life.

The Babyshambles lead singer/songwriter revealed last week he has been off hard drugs for the longest period in eight years and has been reconciled with his father.

On BBC Radio 4's Front Row programme last Thursday he spoke about the therapy he had undergone at Clouds House clinic in Wiltshire.

He said: "This is the first time I've been clean for seven weeks in eight years. I'm not going to lie and say it's not been a struggle. It is.

"I have had a bit of trouble with complete abstinence. I've had the odd Guinness. But I'm quite proud, particularly for my mum and dad. It's been a big change in their life."

Asked if he had been writing while in rehab, Mr Doherty replied: "They didn't encourage me to write songs. I was only allowed to take in two books. They call it isolating.

"My mattress was bulging with all the stuff I wasn't supposed to have with me."

Mr Doherty added: "My dad has welcomed me back into the fold. I can go back home and actually talk to him. We hadn't spoken for three years.

"He came in for family therapy at the rehab centre. It was quite an emotional time."

Mr Doherty and his new girlfriend, Irina Lazareanu, have been seen around and about in Marlborough and went on fairground rides at the Mop Fair on Saturday.

Later the same day, Mr Doherty was playing at the Thekla nightclub in Bristol, where more than 500 people crammed into the converted cargo ship.

In contrast to the gig he performed at the Sun Inn in Marlborough the weekend before, Mr Doherty was more downbeat and some of his fans were disappointed.

Mr Doherty and Miss Lazareanu are staying at a lodge beside the main home of media millionaire Ralph Bernard in Cross Lane, Marlborough.

Neighbour Barbara Hunt said: "He's been the perfect neighbour. You would hardly know he was there.

"I was a bit worried when I heard he was going to be coming to stay opposite, but, in fact, there has been no problem at all."

MTV News has got exclusive pics from Pete's first post-rehab photo shoot with trendy fashion label Gio-Goi

Pictures like the one above suggest that Doherty's latest stint in rehab might just have done the job – and that his famous shirt slogan 'drug free' is now more factual than ironic.

When you add this to Babyshambles' amazing set in Glasgow for Gonzo on Tour and today's court ruling removing Pete's drug treatment order, the future looks bright.

MTV News decided to investigate further and visited Gio-Goi's London headquarters where co-founder Chris Donnelly told us the story behind the photo shoot: "Pete doesn't get the best press but he's just a top bloke, really down to earth and easy to work with".

With pictures up everywhere of stars like Liam Gallagher, Amy Winehouse (face of the women's range), Calvin Harris and Rhys Ifans - all wearing the clobber - we had to ask how the hook ups come about: "Well with Pete it was a strange one, he was doing a show in Manchester and no one wanted to supply him with a venue for an after show party" Chris said.

He continued: "Us being us, we jumped at the chance. We went down there with our double decker bus that's done out as a night club and threw the party. From there we built up some good trust and have worked together ever since".

The Babyshambles frontman made the pledge outside the court after the magistrate praised him for tackling his drug problem.


Speaking about giving up drugs, Doherty said: "I think I am going to have to. I have kind of had enough really. It is just the beginning, you know what I mean, in their eyes."

Doherty also said that he wanted to "get out on the road with the boys" in his band.


Earlier Magistrate Jane McIvor revoked the last six months of Doherty's forced rehabilitation.


She said: "There is no need for any statutory supervision or state funding because the plan that's already in place, the experts have convinced me, is going to be followed."


When asked about his progress, Doherty said: "Yeah (I am) quite proud really, it's the beginning."

Pete Doherty Has Drug Treatment Order Removed
In court today...

Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty has been freed from his drug treatment order.

District Judge Jane McIvor told Doherty at a hearing at Thames Magistrates Court this morning (October 24th) that she would be revoking the remaining six months of his order following consultation with drug experts.

Judge McIvor said that clear plans were in place to ensure that the singer can continue in his battle to beat addiction, reports the BBC.

As the court session drew to a close, McIvor said to Doherty, "I wish you well."

Speaking about the outcome outside the courtroom, Doherty said: "I have just had enough really. It's just the beginning, you know what I mean. My life has changed."

Despite today's result, Doherty is still due in court on Friday (October 26th) to be sentenced on different charges relating to an incident in West London in May.

The singer is charged with driving illegally while in possession of drugs.

Judge Frees Doherty Of Drug Treatment Order

Babyshambles singer Peter Doherty emerged from court in triumph earlier today after a judge was so impressed with his attempts at getting clean, that she removed the remaining term of his drug treatment order. Is this man indestructible?


Doherty appeared at Thames Magistrates' Court in East London this morning (Wednesday October 24) for a review of the singer's drug rehabilitation order.

District Judge Jane McIvor was impressed by Doherty's efforts to keep off drugs and his new clean-living lifestyle and told the singer she was going to revoke the last six months of the order, which has seen him under supervision for the past 18 months.

Judge McIvor explained she had been convinced by experts that Doherty no longer needed the treatment and that a plan was already in place for him to remain clean in the future, saying, "There is no need for statutory supervision or state funding."

Speaking in court, she wished Doherty well before explaining that this was not "the end", but "the beginning" of his rehabilitation and added "You must be pleased.''

Outside court Doherty told a large crowd of reporters and photographers that he was going to have to stay drug free, saying "I've just had enough really" then reiterated the judge's comments saying, "It's just the beginning, you know
what I mean. My life has changed."

Babyshambles will be playing their biggest ever UK tour this winter as well as an exclusive Xfm 10th Birthday gig on December 3 at Kings College, London.
