Lets say i want to play a game with 320x240 resolution in a window with 640x480 resolution and use a filter like xBR.

Now, there's a 2x version of that filter, and versions with higher magnification such as xBR 5x.

So, why not use the "highest" version for any image size? Would there be any disadvantages of using xBR 5x over xBR 2x in the scenario mentioned above?

With the 5x version, image would be magnified to 1600x1200 and then downscaled to 640x480.

What if the end resolution had to be 1920x1080?
What version should be used?

Im a lil confused here.

For that example it's better to use the 2xBR version.

I've put a number in each version to indicate in what scale it works best. So, 5xBR is better at 5x and 2xBR is better at 2x.

The implementations are a bit different in those two.

So, its best to select it so that results match the output-resolution most closely?

So for some displays with 2560x1600 resolution, even higher factors like 6x would make sense.

Also, many ppl stretch their image to widescreen formats in games where propotions dont matter, to have it running on the full screen.

For such cases, would a version with different scaling on x and y axis be possible?
