Pete, I have to say first off thx for all the psx
goodness you have done for the world I have been
using your plugins since PsEmu. I have thought about
looking at some source but dont know if I could find
the time. I know you know how that can be. But I wanted
your insight. Do you think its posible, or has it been
tried?


I have read about sega saturn emu's doing this but
not psx. Most sound tracks are,, well,, not so good.
Since its not realy the authors work and just a soung
that fits the game, I figure there is no need for it.
Most I rip out. In thoes cases is there a way to get a
plug in to load a mp3 from say a play list, or some
other means?

in other words: Say I have ripped or deleted the
tracks/xa out of the iso file. Now playing the game I
want to listen to a mp3 on my drive. I was thinking
there would be a way to have the emulator play the mp3
file or wav file instead of the xa off the iso.

Yup, that's my spam honey-trap, ehe.

Now about your request: the spu plugins have a special interface to the main emu, for playing XA sounds. Therefore, if a main emu would load a MP3, and feed this data by the XA interface function, then every available spu plugin would play this sounds without problem.

But: why should a main emu author add such a feature, I am wondering? If you want to listen to other music, you can simply mute the XA sounds of the game in the spu plugin's cofiguration window, and use WinAmp/AnyOtherPlayer to play whatever songs you like to hear, while playing the game!?!

Well my main goal here is ROM-IMAGE size. Since PSX and Sega started the CD trend there was no more a need to compress anything. I would like to rip all of my PSX collection to my computer. This is my goal. With the xa on a cd its more then 50% of the ISO. Ripping it or compressing it would help. If I take a 650 meg tekken3 CD, and rip the music out then use ePSXe's tool that compressed ISO, I get a nice size image. I asked about mp3's because There are some games that I like the music in. Mp3's would give me 75% compression, or better. Some games use those file.xa files, and I would love to rip that out. But since the emulator is designed to look for it I can't. I hope what I'm trying to accomplish doesn't go against what you feel emulation is for. PSX is the only game system I cant keep on my HD, and need CD's to play. So I'm in search of the best way to shrink them down to a manageable rom size. I feel by the time I figure it out TB drive will be the norm.Pete, whether I find a solution or not, it was an honer to talk to you, thx.

Well, you have to ask a main emu coder for a function like this, but to be honest: I don't think that something like a "XA replacement" option is easy to do. And since the main psx emu development is currently, well, not top priority in the emu coder scene, bad luck.

Pete, that was what I was afraid of, its a core supliment. I was hoping the plugin controled this. Well thx for your time. Best of luck on plugins to come.

Just a note on the XA... XA audio IS compressed already. How else do you think they managed to fit over 80 minutes of music on the Guilty Gear CD, plus all the non-music game content on top of that? Trust me, I personally ripped the XA from that game myself to make a music CD and had to discard a couple of variant versions of a few songs in order for it to fit on an 80 minute CDR, even with removing the default 2 second gaps between tracks...

Compressing to MP3 probably won't help you save much space, unless you compress it to something that's ectremely worse quality than the original XA. Plus there's the fact that XA supports seamless looping while MP3s do not.

Is it possible to exchange an xa-track for another one to be played?
