I recently purchased a laptop which has the 2nd generation core i7 2720Q processor (Sandybridge), and according to the specification from Intel, it supports OGL 3.0. DoctorGL and GLView both confirm that the machine has OGL 3.0 support along with GLU 1.2.2.0 from MS, but I'm seeing a dialog box that says, "Missing render-texture extension!" and "No pixel format available!" any time I attempt to use the plugin.


It would seem that this is a potential issue with the GPU plugin, and although I'm able to use the older OGL 1.77 just fine, I wanted to make someone aware just in case.

Try updating drivers first, since the same could happen to a good videocard using vga drivers.

It could also be that there's no support for the extensions the plugin requires. Regardless of version claimed.

This laptop is brand new and the first thing I did was wipe the DELL installation and re-installed from scratch; so, I'm pretty sure I have the latest drivers, at least up until four days ago:

Intel driver: 8.15.10.2361

As you said, the extension may not be supported regardless. Here is a Doctor GL dump; which should I look for? The dialog mentions 'render-texture' but this doesn't follow the extension naming convention and potentially just a generic message...?

Also, it claims no pixel format is found, but Doctor GL shows a multitude available...

All I could see was that you have half the pixel formats and half the extensions it shows for me. Which really doesn't answer anything.

OpenGL Extension viewer shows more information per pixel format. But, that would also be searching blindly. It has some percentages of claimed support though, where they all 100% ?

Still, the plugin has some checks that ask OpenGL if there's support for that feature. With your current drivers, the returned value is NOT_SUPPORTED.

SO I did some searching on FBOs and came across this article.

Despite having OGL 3.1 support, maybe less than normal, I'm still seeing support for the necessary extensions.

Something else is failing during the check, but what that is, I have no idea... is there some way to enable debug logging perhaps?

BTW, I can change it to draw & copy to the FBO and it'll work, but this is obviously not as fast as direct access.

Well, either Intel is very lazy on exposing the API in their drivers or the GMA HD on a 2nd gen core i7 processor isn't capable of handling that extension which would make exposing it a waste of time.

The good news is that both the old OGL & D3D plugins work great, and even the new OGL will work decently with some customization; however, if I want to run the new OGL optimally, I'll just resort to the Geforce 555T.

I'd like to hear if the latest Intel drivers fix your problem. They appear to be making rounds on the various Tech news sites about their opengl features/fixes.
