"No Escaping Them... Dillinger's Jeff Tuttle and Crew Tear it Up"
Right before the new year, I was lucky enough to catch up with my boy Jeff Tuttle, guitarist for Dillinger Escape Plan, when they played (or should I say destroyed, heh heh) at the Blender Theater in my hometown of NYC.
Jeff is new to the band.. He shreds on guitar and is an amazing performer in his own right and, yeah, if you've seen him with Dillinger, you know they are certainly lucky to have him.....
Dillinger was making their way thru NYC in support of their new album Ire Works (Relapse). Ire Works represents Dillinger at it's best and strongest form to date. With a new lineup and a new intensity in combination with their classic Mathcore sound that defines them, Ire Works is an album sure to be listed as one of the best of 2008.
Jeff took some time to sit with me on camera for my new online TV segment called "Things That Rock" for Gorillawire.com and discuss everything from the new album and touring to the state of the industry and even his roots in Detroit..... Here's a little excerpt of the interview which can be seen online February 3rd....
M: Heyya Jeff.... Thanks for taking some time out of your busy schedule to talk with me... You guys are on tour supporting the new album Ire Works, huh? Tell me about what went into the making of this album? You guys did this in California huh?
JT: Yeah, Steve Evetts, the producer we worked with relocated from the east coast to the west coast... which was great because instead of going home after each session we were completely immersed in the recording process. And being in the sun certainly helped too.... the summer on the east coast is a lot worse then the summer on the west coast.....
M: Yeah for sure... So you guys are heading off to Europe soon for tour? It's been a while....
JT: Yeah it has been... with all the lineup changes, especially drummer Chris (Pennie) leaving... I'm new in the band, so this will be my first tour with Dillinger to Europe.
M:Yeah, I mean listening to the new record it's just killer. I mean the guitar riffs that stick in your brain to the melodies, to the classic jazz presence, to the overall darkness of the record.. just really rad....You guys get along in the newest lineup?
JT: I was a part of the band just before all the drama started, but with all of us, although we are all such different personalities, we tend to gel really nice and it just works..... It's great cause we were all a bit worried about what was gonna happen.....
M:Yeah for sure, but if you listen to the new album it's apparent change is a good thing for Dillinger... Let's talk a little about the industry..... With Radiohead leaving a their label, and putting out their own album and Funeral for a Friend now following suite, and I know you guys are at the end of your contract with Relapse... well, where does that sit with you?
JT:Yeah, Ire works was our last record with Relapse, and so now we are looking at our options carefully... whether to sign with Relapse again or another label or go out and do this on our own like Radiohead... I mean not all bands are as established as them but they have definitely opened the doors to some exciting possibilities for bands to take advantage of by setting a new standard of ways to be a band in the industry... using the net and giving the music to the fans but selling the advertising instead... it's a very exciting time now...
M: Especially for the artist... It puts the power back in our hands... that's pretty killer....
JT: Yeah, some of the greatest music in history came from the 60's and 70's when the musician was allowed the chance to grow and develop into a true artist... and slowly it's changed where the industry has taken that away...so I think the power is coming back to the people....
M:For sure... I mean nowadays if you don't sell the quota on your first album then the label drops you... meh... Any advice for young bands out there?
JT:Yeah, I mean it seems as though new bands are a bit afraid to get their hands dirty, I mean Dillinger put in a lot of blood and sweat into it... started from scratch and now were here.... DIY... I mean I certainly have done it...
