Shah Rukh Khan on Fareed Zakaria GPS show talks Bollywood, Hollywood, global competition, road ahead

New York: You don’t want to miss this !

Fareed Zakaria, host of CNN’s flagship foreign affairs program ‘Fareed Zakaria GPS’ interviews two Indian icons this Sunday, 21 February — India’s richest man and Chairman of Reliance Industries Mukesh Ambani and Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan. 'Fareed Zakaria GPS' airs on CNN at 10 am and 1 pm EST Sunday in the United States and five times globally on CNN International.

Zakaria, often described as “the most influential foreign policy adviser of his generation” and certainly one of a kind from Indian roots, speaks to Ambani on his “massive investment” in Reliance Jio and the single biggest “economic opportunity of the moment.”

Ambani explains why he is betting big on Jio and why that is crucial for India which is on the threshold of a revolution never seen in a "100 years".

Barely a few weeks ago, it was Shah Rukh Khan’s selfie with Mukesh Ambani during the #CelebratingJio launch in Mumbai which smashed records for retweets on Twitter.

“As we saw the year 2012-13, India is 150th in the world in mobile broadband penetration as well as quality. And Jio is really conceived to change this position,” says Ambani in the exclusive interview that airs worldwide on CNN. Zakaria speaks at length with Mukesh Ambani on global oil prices too.

Zakaria travelled from New York to Mumbai to meet Ambani at his residence — Antilla, in India’s financial capital.
Both these marquee interviews on the GPS show have made it into the “must watch” buzz across American broadsheets.

Los Angeles Times lists the Mukesh Ambani interview in its television highlights for the weekend.

The LA Times also speaks of Shah Rukh Khan as “perhaps the world’s biggest movie star.”

Zakaria introduces Shah Rukh Khan to his audience this way: “If you don’t know him and his work, you should.”

Shah Rukh Khan, sporting a beard, talks about how Hollywood is competing to make a mark in India while Bollywood movies stand shoulder to shoulder in the global marketplace.

“If they don’t have six songs, they’re not competing with us,” Shah Rukh Khan begins before getting serious about strategy and stardom in the movies.

“It will be quite a while before international cinema becomes real competition,” Shah Rukh tells Zakaria.

Excerpts from the SRK interview:

Zakaria: Tell me what Bollywood today looks like. How do you deal with competition? Hollywood is making movies for a global audience so that many of their movies make a majority of their revenues outside the US...?

SRK: Thankfully if they don't have six songs, then they are not competition (laughs). But you are completely right. I have always had this worry that if we are not able to change our cinema fast enough then we would be kind of overtaken like Hollywood has. India is the only country where local movies do better than international cinema. Quentin Tarantino said at Cannes or somewhere...that the reason for local movies to survive is stardom. So there is still a huge balance of stardom in this country where there is a director or an actor or an actress...something like NBA in the US. That stardom keeps it going...as long as the star system is retained in this country, it will be a while before international cinema becomes actual competition. But once in a year, there is international cinema that takes over...

Zakaria: So the last time we talked, you were still having this extraordinary problem of getting into the United States because there was a namesake on a terror watch list. What happened?

SRK: Now I’ve been told that that gentleman has been found out. He’s off that list so I’m off the list ( smiles). I’m coming in and going very freely in America. I’m looking out for some Universities for my kids. I came on a tour and it was all fine.

Zakaria: What did that whole experience make you feel?

SRK: It just was very uncomfortable. To land up somewhere and getting stuck in an airport for 2-3 hours for no reason at all…I started travelling light. I started keeping less innerwear…( laughs). God forbid if there was a problem in India, I would be the first to say that we have to strengthen our security. One has to see it in a larger context, it’s a sign of the times. The world is that kind of place…you cannot hold grudges against people..We have to live with it and and just be prepared for some of this stuff.

#ShahRukhKhan @iamsrk 'HEARD THIS? - It's a hat-trick for SRK and #Anushka '

@AnushkaSharma @MumbaiMirror Roshmila Bhattacharya TWEETS@RoshmilaMIRROR

Actress to pair up with King Khan for the third time with Imtiaz Ali's next
Anushka Sharma is on a roll. Besides grappling with `wrestler' Salman Khan and romancing Ranbir Kapoor in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, the actress is all set to waltz off to the Queen's City for Imtiaz Ali's next. According to the grapevine, Anushka has been approached for the film, loves the role and is keen to do it.

As Mirror had reported earlier (March 18), Shah Rukh Khan plays a turbaned Sikh tourist in the yet-to-be-titled comedy. His interactions with the locals and his adventurous return to his home country forms the crux of this laugh riot. The film will be shot in London and parts of Punjab. It will roll after Anushka has wrapped up her present commitments and SRK has completed Gauri Shinde's romance drama with Alia Bhatt.

Anushka entered Bollywood with the Badshah in 2008 with Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, playing the young, vivacious Taani Sahni, who ends up marrying an introverted government employee, Surinder. He goes through a complete makeover to woo his reluctant bride as her partner in a dance competition.

Four years later, she returned with King Khan again in Yash Chopra's swan song, Jab Tak Hai Jaan. She played Akira Rai, a spunky Discovery Channel reporter who enlists the help of an Indian army major to make a documentary on bomb squads and ends up reuniting Samar with the love of his life, Meera (played by Katrina Kaif) and herself walking away with the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. Imtiaz's film will complete a hat-trick for the jodi.

This is Anushka's first collaboration with the filmmaker but they have been keen to work together for five years now. Buzz is, she was one of the top contenders for his Rockstar in 2011. She had cleared the auditions and was even being sized up for the costumes before Nargis Fakri entered the picture.More recently, she was approached for Tamasha but couldn't do the film because of date issues.

#Raees''Ra.One' sequel and more: #ShahRukhKhan @iamsrk on life after #FAN '

http://dnai.in/djTV

Shah Rukh Khan dishes about his upcoming films and rubbishes some rumours...

Shah Rukh Khan’s Fan has just released and his next, Raees is ready. So what will he shoot for next? There are reports that he has given a nod to atleast five films. So which one will take off first? SRK talks about the films on his platter and why he isn’t starting his next at least till July this year. Confirming a few, he talks at length about his line-up for the year ahead. Read on...

Is Raees ready?

Raees has been shot. I will just watch the film in a few days now. I am really looking forward to this film’s release. It has got great dialogues and has some terrific performers like Nawazuddin, Mahira, Zeeshan...
Is it an out-and-out action film?

It’s not completely action but it is very intense. There are about four-five action sequences, but they are not stretched. It’s not like ki fight ho rahi hai and khatam hi nahi ho rahi. But yes, it’s very hard-hitting, very different from Fan. When Raees fights, he is going to win. You don’t fight with Raees.

There were reports that you have shot only about two-three days for Gauri Shinde’s next. Is that true?

I never said I have two or three days of work in Gauri’s film. People don’t listen carefully, nowadays. I said I have only about two or three days of work left to be shot in that film. So I was completely misquoted. I will finish that now. It’s not a cameo at all. It’s a full-fledged role.

Then you have Aanand L Rai’s film where you play a dwarf. Will shooting for that be difficult?

Techonology-wise, no, it won’t be that difficult. Our VFX team is working on it. And Aanand is working with them. It will need tightening. We will do it once and fail, maybe. But we will get it right because it has been done previously. I think it has been tried in The Hobbit. But we have never used that technology in India. I would have a problem if I have to do it on my knees. I am trying to avoid that part because that looks unreal and in today’s time and age, you don’t want to do that. So we are trying to figure out and we are doing R&D already. Aanand has a collection of ideas about what we have to do. If need be, we will figure out how to do it abroad and then bring it here. I have Imtiaz Ali and Aanand’s film now. Films are difficult till you start them and then explore and find out how you are going to do what you have to do.
Do you start with his film, post Raees?

I am on holiday now. Both the filmmakers of mine are beautifully laidback. Imtiaz and Aanand. (Smiles) So maine bol diya hai. Tumhe jab shuru karna hai tum kar lena. They are still working on it and to be honest, it’s not that I finalise a script and say, ‘This is not okay’. I think they themselves still have a few things to fix up.

And of course, there are song recordings too. So, I don’t want to start a film because of my knee. I want to take few months off till June and get my leg in shape. So June tak nahi ho gaya khair. Maybe, July. But I still don’t know whose film I will start first — Aanand’s or Imtiaz’s.

Is it official that you and Anushka are paired opposite each other in Imtiaz’s next?

We are actually just on the cusp of finalising the whole film. I think, in another month’s time, we will announce it. Imtiaz is getting the technical team ready. He is deciding who has to do what first, apart from the stars. He’s casting the whole film and the technicians. So in another 10-15 days, we will make the announcement. Abhi toh title bhi nahi film ka!

There were murmurs that you are playing a Sardar in Imtiaz’s film...

No, I am not playing a Sikh and it’s not a comedy. None of these stories are true.

And the Sanjay Leela Bhansali film with Ranveer?

No. Sanjay Leela Bhansali has not approached me for any film. I also read that he’s doing a film with me and Ranveer. But no, there’s no film like that on the cards. But we meet each other. I think when you go to somebody’s party, people assume that you are doing a film with them. Ranveer and I went to Sanjay’s party so they started this rumour. If there was another hero, then they would have made it a three hero film. (Smiles) I am not doing a film with Shimit Amin either. I have not even met him for a long time. I have been wanting to meet him.

But you are doing Aditya Chopra’s most ambitious project which he mentioned in that imaginary letter...

I mean, Adi has a plan of a film. But he has not narrated it to me. Just like that, one day he will tell me. He has already told me that once he finishes Befikre, he will start writing that film. It will only happen maybe next-year end. It’s a big project is what he has told me. He told me that I need to spend two months with him and it’s very big and very beautiful. He told me, ‘Hum log teen mahine mein shooting khatam kar lenge. But I need two months before that’ (smiles).

Will it be a romantic film?

I have no idea what he’s making, yaar! He’s told me few days back again ki ‘Time nikal ke rakh tu bas’. (Smiles) He will approach me six-seven months before that actual zone. He was planning one, now, I remember, before he started Befikre. And he said the same thing to me. Ki yeh badi waali hai. Khatam ho jaaye Fan toh yeh karte hai. But I think he wanted to do Befikre before this because that is heartfelt for him, so he wants to do this pretty film and then move on to what he wants to do with me.

What’s the status on Don 3?

Don 3 is something that we have had no talk about currently. There has been no development. It’s just that Farhan has somewhere started feeling that he wants to write it, but he hasn’t started writing yet. So usko abhi time hai.

And the Ra.One sequel?

Let me make one more VFX film and then I will make it, Inshallah!

Apple to make Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan an Indian brand ambassador - report

By Roger Fingas
Thursday, June 02, 2016, 06:29 am PT (09:29 am ET)
Apple will be making Bollywood film star Shah Rukh Khan a brand ambassador for India, intensifying the company's profile in the country, according to a Thursday report.
An announcement will be made when Apple launches new iPhones in India later this year, said local website PC Tablet, citing anonymous sources. That could be a month or more after Apple's normal U.S. launch window in September, if patterns from last year repeat. The iPhone 6s only arrived in India in October.

The company has a number of such "ambassadors" elsewhere, such as Brazilian-born soccer player Neymar, or NBA player Steph Curry in the U.S. These people are used to market Apple products, attracting attention through their celebrity.

During his trip to India last month, Apple CEO Tim Cook attended a dinner party hosted by Khan, where other Bollywood celebrities were also in attendance. It's unknown whether Cook made the trip with appointing Khan in mind, or if the idea of using him may have sprung out of the party.

Apple has declared India a focal point of future expansion as the pace of growth has slowed in China. Cook has argued that the arrival of new LTE networks in the country could propel iPhone sales beyond a small 2 percent marketshare, but the main obstacle is believed to be price, since even the iPhone SE costs several times as much as most phones sold in the country.

http://forbesindia.com/article/special/ … es/43755/1 … #ShahRukhKhan @iamsrk
Bollywood stars Shah Rukh Khan and #AkshayKumar are the two Indians to have made it to the 'World’s 100 Highest-Paid Celebrities' list, released by Forbes on Tuesday.
Click here to view the full Celebrity 100 list

http://www.forbes.com/celebrities/#479db3cd4d32

The annual Celebrity 100 ranking includes global talent from across entertainment, media and sports, with over one-third of the celebrities from outside the US.

"Live entertainment continues to supercharge the earnings of the world's top stars," Zack O'Malley Greenburg, Forbes's senior editor of media & entertainment, said in a statement. "From soccer games in Spain to concerts in China, fans are willing to shell out to see big names – and this is driving the celebrity economy to ever greater heights."

Shah Rukh, 50, with earnings of $33 million (approximately Rs 221.6 crore) last year, is ranked No. 86 on the list. The Hindi film actor, producer and television personality features on the list on the back of his box office hit ‘Dilwale’, as well endorsement deals for dozens of brands.

Akshay Kumar, 48, with $31.5 million worth of earnings, is ranked at No. 94.

The global Celebrity 100 list ranks ‘front of the camera’ stars around the globe by their pretax earnings from June 1, 2015 through June 1, 2016, before deducting fees for managers, lawyers and agents. Forbes figures are based on numbers from Nielsen, Pollstar, Box Office Mojo, Songkick, and IMDB, as well as interviews with industry insiders and many of the stars themselves.

American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift is the top ranking celebrity on the list, earning an estimated $170 million over the past year. One Direction takes the No. 2 spot, with earnings of $110 million, followed by author James Patterson (No. 3), with $95 million, and Dr. Phil McGraw and Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo, who are tied for No. 4.

The world’s 100 highest-paid celebrities pulled in $5.1 billion pretax over the past 12 months, more than the GDP of Belize, Gambia and Bhutan combined.
