Hier nun noch der letzte Medazzatalk, den Zak von Clawfinger für uns geschrieben hat fürs Archiv. In der Medazzatalk-Sparte kommt dann bald was neues
AM I A LITTLE BIT BITTER & WHY DO BANDS RECORD COVERS?
So I guess I came across as a little bit bitter in my last Medazzatalk and the simple reason for that is that I probably am! Hell what can you expect 14 years into our career, it's not as if people really care about us anymore with the exception of the real fans, you're simply not expected to be around as long as we've managed to stick together, especially if you play the kind of music we play! Well despite my bitching and occasionally feeling completely misunderstood I have to say that we have the best fucking job in the world, most of my friends have 9 to 5 office jobs, have alot less fun during the course of their day & see less of their children than we do despite the fact that they're never away from home like we are! On the other hand I'm not going to say that we're priveleged and should be happy for every little slice we get as we've worked fucking hard for this, sure a certain amount of luck comes into play & timing whether we were aware of it or not! The simple truth is that we've always felt for what we've done, believed it was special & never tried to be something we're not. We never tried to make music just to sell, we've just tried to put our visions & ideas onto tape in the most natural and satisfactory way possible trying not to force it! That is as much as it's possible for anyone to ever be totally satisfied with what they create! As us humans are a race that strive for perfectionism we will never truly be totally happy & satisfied and I'm sure that is what keeps us moving on, it's what keeps us trying again and again and it's what stops us from giving up and just calling it a day! We're stubborn motherfuckers!
The question of the day is: Why Do Bands Record Covers?
Well there are a couple of reasons, the most common one being that bands desperately want to show off their influences and cornerstones & let the world know which bands they've grown up adoring! That doesn't gaurentee that the result will be any good or add any extra dimensions to the original track but you can usually hear that it's done out of love & admiration! When this is the case the track is very rarely released as a single as that isn't the point from the start either, it's simply released as an album track or a b-side! Another reason would be experiencing a slight dryspell in the creative department but still wanting to record something while you're in the studio so people don't notice you're not currently able to write your own music! It can also be inspiring to and lead you back on track as it gives you some breathing space and doesn't require your devoted attention in the same way as when recording your own music! I think this has been the reason we have made covers most of the times with the exception of the Pink Floyd track which we recorded for a planned tribute album that was never released in the end! The least admirable and most questionable reason would be to secure yourself a hit single by simply recording a song that was a hit years ago, usually It's a recommendation from the record company cos' they're concerned your losing in popularity and need to do something about it quickly or else you're a new and upcoming band and can't be bothered to write your own hit song! Most of the bands that chose this route end up experiencing how it all backfires becos' they have a hit with a song that isn't their's and are doomed from the start to be called the band that did the cover of that other bands song, I can think of plenty of examples but as I think you all can I need not go into details! I'm not the one to judge whether or not bands should record covers, especially as we have made a few ourselves even if none have been released as singles, I just think that some bands should get their own thing going before they reduce themselves to being a one hit wonder with somebody elses hit, that's it!
