Interview mit Pat im aktuellen NME...

As their former guitarist Patrick Walden launches his new band, he finally opens up about why he split from Pete Doherty and co.


Babyshambles founding member Patrick Walden -the man who co-wrote "Fuck Forever" and "Pipedown" with Pete Doherty - has broken his silence about life in the band during their darkest times.

Walden formed Babyshambles with Pete in summer 2004 but quit in December of the following year, a month after debut album "Down in Albion" was released.
"Pete and I were heroin and crack addicts," Walden recalled over a vodka and orange in Chalk Farm pub.
"It got pretty dark.We weren-t making any music.
Mick Jones (former Clash guitarist who produced "Down In Albion") said at the height of their fame The Clash rehearsed five hours a day, but we weren`t doing that.

Walden said his relationship with his former bandmates came to a head when he was remanded for nine days in Pentonville prison in April 2006 while an "on-off" member of the band. He was accused of assaulting his girlfriend after five policemen broke down his door and invaded his flat.Police forced the case to court, where Walden`s girlfriend confirmed that she had not been assaulted and he was found not guilty.

"They went on tour without me," Walden said. "That pissed me off. And the band had become a circus. There were so many snakes - we`d be in the studio and there`d be people taking pictures of Kate Moss doing coke. I went to see Pete in his flat and said I was going to pop out. Pete asked if I was really coming back, and I said "yeah". But I didn`t go back."

Instead, Walden became a recluse and his drug addiction worsened. "I`d been doing the thing I`d been dreaming of my whole life - being in a rock `n` roll band. But fucking it all up...I felt that at 27 my life was over."

Walden left London and slowly got clean. To mark his return to music he was due to reunite with Pete and co at the Manchester MEN Arena last November.
However, Walden decided not to appear despite travelling up on the tourbus.
"I had gone to Windsor to rehearse the night before," he said. "There were drugs about and it was supposed to be a drub-free tour. I wasn`t happy."

Pete phoned a few days later with a view to inviting Walden to play at another show, but his relationship with Mik Whitnall, the guitarist who replaced him in Babyshambles, proved a stumbling block.

"Pete was crying, saying that Mik didn`t want me to play," he declared.
"Mik`s insecure. He had his eye on my job from the beginning."

Walden has since concentrated his musical efforts on his new band, Big Dave, which he formed with drummer Seb Rochford (of Basquiat Strings and Acoustic Ladyland) and Ruth Gollar (also of Acoustic Ladyland) on bass.

"I know Seb from the first Babyshambles sessions," he explained. "We recorded in a little studio in east London and it felt so comfortable, so inspiring. A massive cloud was lifted from my head."
"Big Dave`s sound is melodic and hard - there`s elements of Sonic Youth and Mars Volta in the guitars, but with huge melodies like Oasis or Nirvana," he continued.
"We`ve got songs better than 'Fuck Forever' and 'Pipedown'.
We`re going to record an EP by mid February."

Though Walden is busy with Big Dave for the foreseeable future he has not ruled out a Babyshambles reunion.

"I would play with them," he admitted. "And I`d love to work with Pete again. But I want to establish myself with Big Dave first. We`ll do some fucking damage, man."

Wenn das was die hier ueber Mik schreiben wirklich stimmt, dann bin ich mehr als enttaeuscht.

Oh man ich will Paddy soo gerne zurück, nix gegen Mik, aber ohne Pat fehlt da definitiv was!!!!!

Je öfter ich mir die alten Sachen mit Pat anhöre, bzw. anschaue, desto beschissener finde ich Mik.

Erstmal, danke schön fürs abtippen!!

Hm, hätt ich gar nicht von Pat erwartet, dass er dann doch so schlecht von Mik redet, wie viel da jetzt wahr ist oder nicht sei mal dahin gestellt. Aber Pat war immer so anti-gossip in meinen Augen. Freut mich aber wenn er mit Big Dave glücklich ist, und EP klingt auch interessant!! Würde mich nicht wundern, wenn das spannender wird als die nächste Babyshambles Veröffentlichung.

^^ ja das stimmt ich bin auch wirklich gespannt wie sich big dave dann so anhoeren. hoffe es wird ueberraschend frisch im vergleich zum rest hier von der insel.

ich wuerd ihn trotzdem liebend gern wieder bei den babyshambles sehen.
aber ich denke dafuer haben sie sich schon zu weit auseinander gelebt.

Ich traue dem Ganzen nicht. Auch solche Aussagen: "We`ve got songs better than 'Fuck Forever' and 'Pipedown'." sprechen eher für Neid, dass die 'Shambles (zumindest momentan -> bezogen auf Petes Drogenabhängigkeit) ohne ihn ihr Ding ganz gut durchziehen. Die ganze Wahrheit werden wir ohnehin nicht erfahren.

ja na klar ist er irgendwo neidisch. schliesslich war er mal ein essentieller bestandteil dieser band und hat wohl kaum damit abgeschlossen, bei dem abgang.
ich denke die art wie er er auf die fragen reagiert hat zeigt nur wie sehr ihm das ganze noch was bedeutet.

Hm, Big Dave nimmt eine ganz andere Richtung als damals Babyshambles. Man muss aber sagen, dass Pat sowohl Fuck Forever als auch Pipedown mitgeschrieben hat, und das was ich von seinen lyrics kenne, war auch nicht ohne. Klar ist das nicht ganz ernst zu nehmen, und Big Dave machen kein zweites Down in Albion- das wollen sie ja wohl auch nich- trotzdem würd ich die Aussage nicht als blanke Selbstüberschätzung abstempeln. Obwohl sie schon irgendwie an Oasis erinnert hat.
