Don’t mind my business, mind yours: SRK

Author: Upala KBR Date: 20 May 2008

Shah Rukh Khan’s message to the officials who have a problem with his presence in the dug-out area

t’s not easy being a celebrity. Shah Rukh Khan is living proof of that. The actor rarely gets upset, but when his authority is challenged, King Khan roars loudly.

On Sunday, the actor was told to keep a safe distance from his team. The Anti-Corruption Unit of the ICC told the KKR owner that he should not be in the players’ dressing room and their dug-out was out of bounds too.

Yesterday, IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi briefed the media on allowing owners of IPL teams access to dug-out area for unlimited time, there was a rumour that Shah Rukh and other owners would have only fifteen minutes of time in the specified area.

No issue?

When asked about the controversy Shah Rukh says, “I have no issue with them. Nor do I need to ask for 15 minutes etc to meet with the team I own. Only IPL or IMG or whoever is in charge of stuff on grounds should inform their officials from ICC or whatever other agency they are from, about the rules before they question someone who has all the accreditations, passes or permissions with him/her and incidentally, happens to be the owner of the team too.”

The actor feels he is being targetted because he is a celebrity, “It’s quite prevalent now to take on a known personality and behave high-handedly so that one gains some form of personal importance. It’s happened a few times before, during the matches too.

I decided to be civilised about it, in the larger interest of my team’s morale and state of mind especially when they were down. Someone sent me a message yesterday if you want to lead the orchestra you have to learn to turn your back to the crowds.

I guess I will turn my back on this one too and keep trying to make the music that makes sense to me and that gives me very little time to answer to these loud regulatory noises around me don’t walk here, don’t enter the dressing room, don’t dance there, don’t meet players! Hey!

How about don’t mind my business, try and mind yours more efficiently for a change that will be more helpful. Now if I want to meet my team I will do so at my house, or in their hotel, not on the grounds for 15 minutes!”

Narendra Modi then, Shah Rukh now

LOKENDRA PRATAP SAHI

The home team’s dressing room door at the Eden with warnings. On the door’s left is a notice board with Kolkata Knight Riders photographs, including that of SRK. Pictures by Santosh Ghosh
May 19: Some years ago, Niranjan Singh Virk made headlines by asking chief minister Narendra Modi to leave the precincts of the Team India dressing room as he didn’t hold a pass for that area at the Motera Stadium.

The Gujarat strongman wasn’t too pleased, but obliged. That earned Virk, a former Central Bureau of Investigation officer involved with the match-fixing probe in 2000, kudos from his employers — the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Virk is the ICC’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit’s regional manager and has helped train the Indians recruited by the Indian Premier League (IPL) to act as anti-corruption officers.

The world body’s Code of Conduct and protocol are in operation in the IPL.

On the face of it, though, Virk got it wrong last night when he asked Kolkata Knight Riders’ owner Shah Rukh Khan — whose photograph features next to the team’s dressing room door at the Eden Gardens as part of the squad — to refrain from visiting the dressing room and the dugout area.

According to The Telegraph’s sources, Virk conveyed that during the break between innings of the Knight Riders versus Chennai Super Kings clash.

While one source maintained Virk had been somewhat offensive in his tone, another pointed out that he’d only tried to “educate” the megastar on the “dos and don’ts” of dressing room protocol.

Shah Rukh wasn’t around when the mandatory anti-corruption briefing for the teams was conducted in Bangalore, before the IPL got under way on April 18.

The interaction between Shah Rukh and Virk took place in the match officials’ chamber adjacent to the Knight Riders’ dressing room. Also present, for some time at least, were match referee Farokh Engineer and the anti-corruption officer on duty, C.P. Singh.

Engineer, for one, declined to comment.

The Knight Riders team management insisted Shah Rukh had a valid “visitor’s pass” for the area, but why was one necessary when his photograph figures among the Sourav Gangulys and the John Buchanans?

Moreover, why was he not provided with a red (all-area) accreditation card?

As strange, one of the sources maintained that a photograph on the team board outside the dressing room “didn’t guarantee” entry into the players’ domain!

That source added: “Normally, a visitor’s pass is issued on a need-basis... The computer analyst could need the help of a technician or an electrician may be required... Such passes have absolutely nothing to do with anybody’s status and stature.”

Virk, apparently, explained to Shah Rukh that he wasn’t casting any aspersion at all, but “expected” a role model like him to follow rules and regulations to the hilt. Also, that it wasn’t exactly proper for his son (Aryan) and personal bodyguard (Yasin) to follow him into the dressing room.

Whatever, that interaction upset Shah Rukh so much that (according to a member of the Knight Riders’ team management) he even contemplated walking out of the Eden.

“Shah Rukh, who goes to the extent of knocking on the dressing room door before entering, had to be pacified by people from the IPL, who apologised for what had happened... It’s only then that he went back to the dressing room and the dugout,” said that member of the team management.

The megastar didn’t say anything at the Eden, but got emotional at a function at the team hotel before flying back to Mumbai on a private jet.

“Don’t tell me I’m corrupt... I’m really disappointed (at being barred)... Nobody can stop me from coming... The CBI... ICC Code of Conduct... Anybody, anybody dare try to stop me from being at every match in Calcutta,” are excerpts from what Shah Rukh said.

Yesterday, incidentally, was Virk’s first visit to the city during the IPL. What’s intriguing is why C.P. Singh didn't have a one-on-one with Shah Rukh during the first match itself, a month back?

With the issue generating so much heat, the IPL has now decided to issue all-area passes to one member of each franchise.

Vijay Mallya (Bangalore Royal Challengers) and Preity Zinta (Kings XI Punjab) already have it.

Clearly, there are lessons which the IPL needs to learn from this inaugural edition. There are issues which need clarity and the Shah Rukh Khans, who’ve raised the level of interest in the competition truly phenomenally, shouldn’t be slighted.

Knights without armour

LOKENDRA PRATAP SAHI

Sparsely occupied stands at Eden Gardens at 8.46pm on Tuesday. The turnout in the overcast evening ranged between 50,000 and 60,000 — the lowest in Calcutta since the IPL season started. On Sunday, when a storm lashed the city, the Eden had a capacity 80,000-plus crowd. Picture by Pabitra Das

May 20: The Kolkata Knight Riders suffered another defeat, the third in a row, to almost push themselves out of the hunt for a last-four berth, and the recurrence of a knee problem kept Shoaib Akhtar away from tonight’s clash against the Rajasthan Royals.

But the royal letdown (and definitely the much bigger news really) was the absence of the Knight Riders’ owner, Shah Rukh Khan, for the first time in a home match of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

According to The Telegraph’s sources, Shah Rukh sent text messages to coach John Buchanan and Co. saying he wasn’t coming to Calcutta and the Eden.

Shah Rukh, however, gave no reason and (understandably) his silence triggered much speculation.

Different people gave different reasons for Shah Rukh’s absence and that only added to the confusion.

A very prominent member of the franchise, for example, said Shah Rukh was “feeling feverish” and, so, decided not to come.

“Shah Rukh’s been travelling a lot in recent weeks and isn’t well.… But, believe me, he’s going to be present at the Eden on Sunday (for the last league-stage match, versus Preity Zinta’s Kings XI Punjab).”

Shah Rukh’s film co-ordinator Subhas Jain, though, gave an entirely different story from Mumbai.

“Shooting has been scheduled from 7pm till 6am tomorrow…. The same schedule had been followed yesterday.”

The film in question, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, is being directed by Aditya Chopra and is from the top-of-the-line Yash Raj Films’ stable.

However, even before the IPL began, Shah Rukh had told this reporter that he’d “adjusted” dates for film and TV shoots in a manner which would allow him to attend all seven of the Knight Riders’ home matches.

Obviously, then, two factors could’ve forced a change in plan — for tonight, at least.

First, the unnecessary embarrassment caused by Niranjan Singh Virk’s act of barring him from the dressing room and the dugout at the Eden on Sunday.

Virk is the regional head of the Anti-Corruption and Security Unit of the International Cricket Council (ICC) and had come to oversee arrangements during the Knight Riders-Chennai Super Kings face-off.

The IPL isn’t an ICC tournament, but is being run with the world body’s Code of Conduct and protocol in operation.

In a turnaround, the IPL chairman and commissioner, Lalit Modi, today accepted that Virk had been wrong in curtailing Shah Rukh’s movements.

“There is no controversy.… Shah Rukh shouldn’t have been stopped. The Telegraph has carried the picture of players and officials who should be allowed entry into the dressing room. Shah Rukh features among them…. So you can’t deny him access,” Modi explained this afternoon.

That came too late, though.

Second, Shah Rukh may have felt drained after watching two losses in a row — at the Eden and at the Wankhede, defeats which turned the heat back on the Knight Riders in a big way.

Actually, it’s just as well that Shah Rukh stayed back in Mumbai, or else he would’ve witnessed a dubious hat-trick. Tonight’s loss was by six wickets.

The franchise (co-owned by Jay and Juhi Mehta), clearly, has plenty to do.

Kolkata livid after Knights fail to reach semis

Kolkata: Cricket fans in Kolkata are perhaps the most fickle in the country. This time though they have reason to be enraged. Their team has been dumped out of the Indian Premier League and what's worse is their meek surrender.

"Rightly or wrongly, this is my personal belief that korbo, lorbo, jeetbo which means do, fight and win is what life is all about. And I make no bones in saying that," a confident Shah Rukh Khan had said in an interview with CNN-IBN few days ago.

But it seems as if SRK’s Knights simply weren't up to the task. It has been quite a while since cricket-crazy Kolkata erupted with so much of bitterness.

As the Knights rode out of the Eden Gardens after their six-wicket defeat at the hands of Rajasthan Royals, they were done in by a far superior team and the disappointment hurtled out.

"I’m very disappointed by Sourav Ganguly’s performance. He is not batting well and he is not bowling well. He should be thrown out of the team," said a fan.

"Don’t take anyone who is a burden to the team and I have no hesitation in taking the names of Aakash Chopra and Ajit Agarkar," added another livid Kolkata supporter.

Despite of the marketing blitz and the star-power behind them, the Knight Riders campaign never really kicked off. Other than beating the Delhi Daredevils, the Knights never really came close to winning against any of the other top teams. And just beating the two least successful teams twice over didn't really help.

"We haven’t played well throughout the tournament. We have had starts and stops and today the better side won," Ganguly had said after his side was drubbed on their home ground on Tuesday.
What rubs it in more is perhaps the advice that one of India's shrewdest captains got from his own city.

"I would suggest Sourav Ganguly not to preach umpires on catches. He should learn from Shane Warne. Warne is a retired player now but he is also the skipper of Rajasthan Royals and he taught Ganguly a lesson," said one of the many spectators at the Eden Gardens, who witnessed the demise of the Knight Riders.

Clearly the theme song of korbo, lorbo, jeetbo re has fallen flat and it's back to the drawing board for the Knights.

SRK's call to rally around the team

We had started with two outstanding victories to set the pace for IPL 20-20 cricket. Then, four times in a row, we have seen the match being given away at the last minute. The critics were quick to comment, but our war cry has never been silenced. If anything, the thirst for victory is now stronger in us. And our motto is strengthened by the faithful fans who chant along with us, even in our weakest moments, ''Korbo! Lorbo! Jeetbo Re!''

We then bounced back with three great victories. After that, we were beaten in Mumbai and then were unlucky with the rain at our beloved Eden Gardens. Now, we are in a position where we can still bounce back and do well in the tournament.

It is you, fans, and your generous wishes and comments that have always driven the passion in us. For that, I am thankful. I know that even when we lose a wicket, you will be there to cheer us on so that the batsman heading to the pavilion can walk with head raised, so that the batsman coming in to play can feel encouraged, and so that the opponent knows what incredible force they are up against.

And the fact that we are a force to be reckoned with cannot be denied. We may have had a few bad days on the field, but the game is still on. We are prepared. I have faith in the invaluable experience of our senior players, and in the endless potential and talent of our younger Knight Riders like Ashok Dinda and Ishant Sharma. They are gems in the rough, raring to show the opponent what they are made of. It is an unbeatable mix.

Our captain, Sourav, has been quick to draw attention from critics who think he is not well suited to the 20-20 format. A few outstanding performances, not just with bat and ball but sharp captaincy as well, should answer all those questions. It was a proud moment when he was adjudged Man of the Match. My faith in him and the team cannot be shaken.

Also, Shoaib is finally here with the team, and won a match for us against Delhi. His injury is a worry, but I am sure he will recover and play a part in the forthcoming matches.

Some big games are coming up, and we need your support. We have had a good start, and a bad patch down the line. But, like in the movies, can you have a truly happy ending without some rough competition in the middle?

Lets wait for the happy ending!!

‘Punishment msg’ from SRK

- ‘Ignore all this bit about Dada, me and John having issues’
(/b]
LOKENDRA PRATAP SAHI

New Delhi, May 21: The Kolkata Knight Riders owner, Shah Rukh Khan, may not attend the team’s next (and last) match at home, against Kings XI Punjab on Sunday, too. He was not present at the Eden last night either.

Shah Rukh has, among other things, conveyed that to the team via an emotional, highly motivational and lengthy SMS this afternoon. He also dismissed talk of differences between him and captain Sourav Ganguly and coach John Buchanan.

The team is in the capital for tomorrow’s Indian Premier League (IPL) clash against the Delhi DareDevils.

The following is the SMS, forwarded to The Telegraph by a member of the Knight Riders squad:

“Story time boys... I told you if you keep losing you have to bear with my long, boring msgs.... This is your punishment.... Many times I have made movies which don’t do well.... When I’m doing them, of course, I don’t know they won’t do well.... The story is written by somebody else and I just do my bit as an actor. But I have a way of dealing with flop stories..., I try my best to keep my character in the film at a level that it makes a failed story also special for me....

“I enjoy the work.... I make jokes about the failure.... And, of course, feel awful about it too.... So, right now, all of us have become part of a failed script... A bad IPL script.... Let’s try and keep our characters worthy of still looking back at this story and remembering it as a special story becos we all worked very hard at this....

“So, chin up and don’t spoil yr character in the next two games.... Let’s go out with a bang and not a whimper.... In films, we say u r only as good as yr last film.... So let’s make the whole world know how good we r in the last (maybe not) two games...

“Also, do ignore all this bit about Dada, me and John having issues.... It’s a normal thing in the world.... People like to hit you when u r down.... So, we will be hit.... No stress.... It will make us stronger.... The only way to avoid this is to win.... That’s one of the reasons why everybody likes to be a winner....

“On the other hand, the beauty of failure is that it brings people together.... So, let’s stick this out together.... You know me well enuff to know I am not the kind of owner who has issues with the team ’cos of losses... I am too much of a sport myself to get beaten by defeats.... Like you guys are.... Like Dada and John....

“I am still trying to understand the code of conduct expected of me at the matches of the IPL.... ICC... Etc.... After I understand it, I will decide whether to accept it or not.... Till such time, I will be with you guys at the hotel... in the meetings etc., but won’t come for the matches.... So, please don’t ever feel it is anything to do with us as a team....

“I am as dedicated to my Knights as I am to my kids.... Only, I won’t be coming to the class room till the headmaster’s rules are understood by me.... I am a bit anti-Establishment kind of a guy, so I apologise for this quirk to u all.... So, head’s up.... Have a good match and let’s make 200 runs tomorrow.... This 150 seems to not work any more....

“We have nothing to lose now, except our character.... Let’s not lose that.... Lov... SRK.”

Shah Rukh says he will stay away from IPL matches

KOLKATA: In an emotional outburst, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan said on Thursday that he would stay away from the remaining matches of the Indian Premier League till he understood the code of conduct expected of him at the matches, a statement which has the potential to throw the Indian Premier league into a fresh controversy.

Making an oblique reference to his being debarred from the players' dugout at the Eden Gardens by the ICC Anti Corruption officials, Shah Rukh said in a sms to his Kolkata Knight Rider players that he was still trying to understand the code of conduct expected of him at the matches.

"I am still trying to understand the code of conduct expected of me at the matches of the IPL.... ICC... Etc.... After I understand it, I will decide whether to accept it or not. Till such time, I will be with you guys at the hotel, in the meeting etc., but wont come for the matches," he said.

Denying suggestions in a section of the media that his absence from the field had something to do with the team's poor performance, he said "Please dont ever feel it is anything to do with us as a team.... I am as dedicated to my Knights as I am to my kids.... Only, I wont be coming to the class room till the headmasters rules are understood by me.... I am a bit anti-Establishment kind of a guy, so I apologise for this quirk to u all."

Shah Rukh, who owns the Kolkata Knight Riders team, also denied any rift involving him, captain Sourav Ganguly and coach John Buchanan saying such things are normal when the scale is not tilted in one's favour.

Mumbai, Delhi Love Srk’s Team More Than Their Own

Something to cheer about...the SRK magic

KKR STEALS IPL SHOW

UNDISPUTED KING

MUMBAI, DELHI LOVE SRK’S TEAM MORE THAN THEIR OWN

TR Vivek & Amit Sharma NEW DELHI

BOLLYWOOD badshah Shah Rukh Khan’s gaudy gold-armoured Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) look set to be knocked before IPL semifinals. If the rumours of a dressing room rancour are true, SRK would have to take on Kolkata icon Sourav Ganguly in his own den. But if King Khan continues to be at his cocky best there’s good reason.

An eight city survey commissioned by ET and carried out by market research firm Synovate shows that SRK is the undisputed winner in the business end of IPL sweepstakes. While a cricket crazy Kolkata is firmly behind SRK’s team, he has managed to charm followers across cities to root for his team rather than their ‘home’ franchisees.

KKR is the first choice team for nearly a third of cricket followers across India. Fans even in big metros, which have strong corporate-backed teams of their own, seem to be cheering for eastern side with greater gusto. While just 21% of Mumbaikars supported the Reliance-owned Mumbai Indian’s, 30% backed SRK’s team. In Delhi too, nearly a third supported KKR and only one in five called the home team, Delhi Daredevils, their favourites. With MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings and surprise package Rajasthan Royals performing well, they are the other most well-supported team. The fan promiscuity in cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bangalore could be attributed to the large migrant population whereas the relatively-less cosmopolitan cities such as Jaipur, Chennai and Chandigarh seem to be fiercely loyal to their home teams.

“Kolkata is an emotional city, so the response here was expected, but elsewhere, our popularity can largely be attributed to the lethal combination of cricket and brand SRK,” says a delighted Kolkata Knight Riders CEO Joydeep Bhattacharya. Delhi Daredevil’s CEO Yogesh Shetty contends his company’s experience has been totally different. “Since the sample size is small, I am not surprised by the findings. Our T-shirts are selling the most among all the other franchisees and that establishes our popularity.”

Synovate carried out this survey from May 13 to May 15 across the eight cities that have IPL teams, with a 1,601 sample size, 15-45 years, equally spread across eight cities and gender. So how do these franchise owners with strong loyalty plan to monetise it? “We are looking at opening memberships to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) Fan Club after the first season and are keenly looking at even foreigners. We are eyeing big NRI subscriptions and have customised offerings for all,” says Rakesh Singh, marketing head, India Cements, that owns CSK.

Even brands that are associated with SRK’s team such as Nokia seem to tower over the rest when it comes to recall. Every second respondent identified Nokia with IPL ahead of official sponsors such as DLF and Pepsi. Kingfisher, an official IPL sponsor that launched a huge marketing blitz came in a distant second with less that 30% associating the brand with IPL. Says Nokia India MD D Shivakumar: “The reason for Nokia’s success is brand SRK. We are also happy to have put our money on the right team.”

IPL’s minders in BCCI had scoffed at suggestions that IPL was more about entertainment and showbiz rather than cricket, but the survey shows that more viewers readily identify, and at times watch the matches for SRK and Preity Zinta rather than the game’s legends like Tendulkar and Ganguly. When asked to recall individuals associated with IPL, only five cricketers could make it to the list of Top 10. As the initial TV ratings have suggested, IPL has been the biggest marketing and media success in recent times. According to the survey, the event has enjoyed 100% awareness among people, with each one of them having either watched the matches live or on TV.

Ergo, IPL’s Lorelei lure has made people alter their consumption patterns, social behaviour and lifestyle. In Chandigarh, more than 40% of the respondents had stopped going out for films because of the cricketainment on offer, and a fifth in Delhi have skipped going out for dinner when the matches are telecast.

SRK: Ganguly and I are not fighting

Nithya Ramani

Shah Rukh Khan has put to rest all rumours about a rift between Kolkata Knight Riders captain Saurav Ganguly, and himself.

"Saurav and I are good friends. There is no problem between Saurav, John [Buchanan, coach for the Knight Riders] and me," he says. "Certain sections of the press have misquoted me on this. I do not think that I need to justify that we are a team. I am too old in this business of winning and losing. I do not think that I need someone coming and telling me about anti-corruption after 40 days into the tournament. I own the Knight Riders and I have paid them to win. Now, if they are losing, does that mean that I am paying them to lose?

"There is more to life than just winning. I read somwhere that I was kicking chairs. I have seen too many victories and losses, and I'm too old in this game to react like this," he continues. "When we won, it was said 'Prince and King ruled.' Now that we are not doing well, they assume that somthing must me wrong between Saurav and me. I would like to clarify that nothing is wrong. Saurav has sent me messages asking me to clarify to all that we are friends. We are not fighting, the team is not going to be sold. John is not angry with Saurav. Saurav is not angry with me. I am not kicking chairs. There are no issues. Yes, I do have certian issues with the IPL on the code of conduct. That needs to be clarified. Only then will I go to the matches."

I have paid my players to win, says SRK

Mumbai, May 22:: Shah Rukh Khan still cannot believe he had been stopped from entering the dressing room of the team he owns and the actor sulks he has been singled out for such a harsh treatment. Shah Rukh, who owns the Kolkata Knight Riders team of the Indian Premier League, made it clear that he was very upset after being told, by an official of the ICC Anti-Corruption and Security Unit, to stay away from the players.

"I have paid my players to win. Will I pay them now to lose? This is illogical," an angry Shah Rukh told journalists on the sets of his television show Kya Aap Panchvi Paas Se Tez Hain at the Film City in suburban Mumbai.

The actor was clearly upset at being treated as if he was a bookie.

"IPL has its set of rules and regulations and I am a law-abiding person. But, why pick me? Other team owners are seen near their players. Is it because I am a celebrity and vulnerable?" he asked angrily.

IPL authorities subsequently decided that an owner can stay in the team dug-out, while four visitors would be allowed to 15 minutes each and they can be there one at a time.

Shah Rukh was far from happy with the IPL decision to give only 15 minutes to the visitors.

"Why should I be given only 15 minutes time with my players? This is unfair," the actor said.

He said IPL is a domestic cricket tournament and should follow the rules and regulations of BCCI.

Scoffing at reports in a section of the media that he does not get along with his team captain Sourav Ganguly, Shah Rukh asked, "Reports said that I was kicking chairs. Don't I have any work other than clarifying to the whole world that nothing of this sort has happened?"

He said Knight Riders has lost a couple of matches and the team was down at present, but it should not be looked as an opportunity to 'hatch conspiracy theories'.

"I have learnt that the world loves only winners," he said.
The actor said Ganguly messaged him thrice requesting to clarify on the media reports of the alleged rift between them.

"My team told me that they have yet to meet a better human being than me. This is a huge compliment for me," said the actor.

SRK admitted that his team's losses were hurtful and disturbing.
"But this is a game and if there is a winner then there has to be a loser also," he said rubbishing rumours that he was planning to sell off his team.
"Don't hit someone when he is down. I have seen too many losses and victories in my career including films flopping, running successfully and speculations of not getting along with fellow film fraternity members. This is just one small incident," he said.
