Well, I have the KT cleaned up and put back together. I am painting it to represent a tank of 2./Schwere Panzer-Abteilung 509 in Hungary. I have the book "Tigers in Combat I" and have based the scheme from one of the color illustrations in it. The problem is that the artwork shows the tank in a dark yellow scheme, however it is hard to tell from the photos if this is correct. I do however like the dark yellow only, with white wash mostly removed.

How does it look?

Nice looking tank, Crunchie, but somehow the photos do not seem to do this tank any justice. Are you using a digital camera? Digital cameras are very good for close-up shots even with the one sold in the 70 $ range. I could not manage to take good close-up pictures until I use a digital camera.

Pierre,

The pics are from a digital camera, but I think the batteries might have been low. I was playing with the manual focus because it wouldn't take a decent picture, so I will try to get some better shots.

In the color photo, you might notice a color difference from the hull and the turret. Seems I had neglected to paint that side of the hull before I started white washing, so it is the color of the plastic that you see. I didn't realize this until after taking the pictures!

When I cleaned the gearbox and hull, it was clear that I had to find a way to seal the box from the outside elements and to keep the grease from spattering the inside. I found out that a plastic sandwich bag fits perfectly over the gearbox, although you must cut holes for the final drives and mounting screws. One sandwich bag covers the box up to the last plate and leaves the motor gear and clutch gears exposed. To leave the entire motor exposed, use a "snack" sandwich bag!

Note: One thing that could happen is the bag catching in the gears, but this has not happened to me yet. It is a very tight fit!

The tank is far from completed. I still have to do the tool and tow rope brackets, paint the hull, make the hatches open and close, plus make the turret and cannon operational.

I've been ill the past few days, but did manage to apply a bit more realistic paint scheme to the tank, Friday. Seems that the illustration in the back of the book is a little off, more so when you compare it to the historical data, as well as the actual photos of it. It now has the standard "ambush" scheme, heavily weathered from a winter white wash that has been cleared by spring rains. I did manage to keep that weathered look since I really like it. I hope to post new pics of it in the next few days.

Thanks for the compliments everyone!

Ron
