Hi Guys,

Just off the bench and its not the usual quick build for me.

Hobbyboss 1/48 FM_1 Wildcat built to represent a Wildcat V of the Fleet Air Arm on the HMS Atheling during May 1944.

It was not a straight build as there are some parts that require carefull assembly. Some parts were brittle and I had to fix them up using super glue.

The trickiest part is the assembly of the landing gear which has delicate parts. It took me time to get it right. Note that you should also look out for the dihedral of the wing during assembly. You will not have the problem when you are building the Tamiya Wildcat. Then engine crank case also needs some attention during assembly to get the right fit.

Although the kit comes with separate machineguns, they cannot be seen once the wings are closed. You have to cut the panels if you want to model them opened plus you have to scrathcbuild the ammo bays. I decided not to use the machineguns and opted to use No. 20 syringe needles for the barrel.

This is not the "shake and bake" type of model that you usually find in Tamiya kits. This one required some filing and sanding plus making sure that mating halves fit right and are aligned. I must say that surface detail is very good.

I opted to close the canopy as modeling it on the open position will require some work to get it right.

Painting was done using Gunze #333 (Extra Dark Sea Grey) and my own mix of Dark Slate Grey using Mr. Color paints. The undersides were painted with Tamiya XF-21 Sky.

The decals I used were from Aeromaster. I had no problems with it and it worked well with Solvaset.

Although it was not the usual quick build, shake and bake project for me, I was pleased with the results. I have two more Hobbyboss Wildcat kits and will plan to do them soon.

Cheers,

Hi Tony!

One Word, I hope it`s right.

Maganda

Always good to see a FAA Wildcat. I like the camo scheme, just different from the US a/c. Very nice built and of course a very good paint job. How is the Hobby Boss Kit against the Tamiya Wildcat? Cheers, Udo.

Hi Udo,

Thanks for the "maganda" and yes you got it right.

The Hobbyboss kit is not as easy to build like the Tamiya Wildcat. For one the landing gear parts of the Hobbyboss were tricky and some of the plastic was brittle. Plus you need to be careful with the wing dihedral. In the Tamiya kit, you wont have a problem with this as the lower wing and center fuselage is molded in once piece. The Hobbyboss kit is not. As for the surface, the Hobbyboss has good surface details.

Since I wanted to make an FM-1, Hobbyboss provides me with an out of the box kit unlike the Tamiya Wildcat is an F4F-4 and will require the removal of the outer gun to make it into an FM-1. Hobbyboss also has the early, F4F-3, the late F4F-3, the F4F-4 , FM-1 and FM-2 so choices are wide.

Despite the delicate parts and the need for filling and sanding, overall its still a good kit and for those who want to build the Wildcat varieties without resorting to aftermarket parts, then Hobbyboss is the best alternative.

Cheers,
Tony

Hello Tony,
what a nice model.
Fantastic work and lacquerwork.
Its a typical Bossman
I have one question, was the british name from the wildcat not martlet-or is it a mistake from me?

What to hell ist the meaning from "Maganda"

Cheers, Sven

Hi Sven,

"Maganda" is a Filipino word meaning "beautiful".

The Fleet Air Arm (FAA) named the earlier Wildcats as Martlet I, Martlet II, Martlet III and Martlet IV. On the FM-1, they decided to name it Wildcat V and Wildcat VI for the FM-2 version. I will check on the equivalent of the early Wildcats against the Martlets.

To Uwe:, thanks for the compliment.

Cheers,

very nice

I love this paint scheme of camo. The decal set is beautiful too.

Is there any kit from HobbyBoss of this Wildcat available for the smaller 1/72 scale (with the same decal set)?!??
