Rischard

Playing a 'home match' and back in the intimacy of a small theatre, Esther exhibited a disarmingly free and easy manner last Sunday. Occasionally making fun with her long time musicians, she would only need a short moment of concentration, before getting carried away entirely by a sad ballad. During Adio Querida many in the audience couldn't keep their eyes dry, including Esther herself. Another favourite of mine this evening was a gorgeously tender account of Over The Rainbow. For aficionados like myself gems like Shir Eres or Besade Patuach alone, are already worth making the journey to Hamburg. There are, however, still so many other beautiful songs Esther could choose from her repertoire, which we haven't heard for a long time. Just to name the vast Hebrew collection, or for instance another beautiful song from the album Jerusalem is derived from. And why not reprise her memorable "wehmütige" version of Sommerwind, which would meet a rapturous reception, I'm sure. I would love to see her reprise something like that, rather than Alabama and Mad About The Boy, which are almost obligatory inclusions in her programme, even though I can understand Esther and the general public also want some more rhythmic songs for a change. Anyway, this is merely meant as a hint and nothing other than that. Esther's voice -pure, direct, moving, and communicative- is one of the enduring wonders of German theatre over the past ten years.
