Uruguayan software and service exports reached US$219mn last year, representing a 17% increase over the US$188mn exported in 2007, according to figures released by Uruguayan IT industry association Cuti.
Uruguay is Latin America's leading software exporter per capita, and third-ranked exporter in absolute terms, finishing behind Brazil and Argentina, Cuti general manager Irene González told BNamericas, confirming press reports.
Cuti currently has 260 member companies - up 44% from the 180 firms that made up the organization in 2006, the executive said, adding that Cuti has added 20 members since the start of this year alone.
The Uruguayan software and services industry employees more than 9,000 workers, according to Cuti statistics.
In a previous interview, González told BNamericas that many Uruguayan firms have traditionally focused on selling to Latin American countries such as Mexico, Chile and Argentina, but Cuti is encouraging firms to explore other markets such as the US and Europe.
