After numerous releases on the Cologne based Karmarouge and the Broque netlabel, Max Cavalerra doesn’t need much of an introduction. In this EP he points out he’s able to manage different styles of contemporary techno. Deep, bass-driven techno, bumpy clickno as well as incorporating warm melodies without losing touch with the percussion structure underneath. This EP is a truly proof of his capabilities to capture an idea into quality music, whatever the vibe of the track is.

For me, ‘Function’ and ‘In Memory of Voilett’ are the ones you should pay special attention to. ‘In Memory of Violet’ stands out the most with subtle layered percussions and a warm soothing melody which makes you forget how apathetic techno could sound. ‘Function’ on the other hand, is a bouncing groovy piece with a nice percussion-fed hook in the middle of the track. Especially the way the break falls in, with rambling stabs and cuts without losing touch with the original groove, is work of subtle perfection. Other tracks such as ‘1000cm’ and the industrial techy ‘Impact’ are perfectly suitable for any occasion to be played out through the night.

With clearly a couple of tracks standing out of the bunch you could say this is a mediocre release but the variety Cavalerra shows in this package will inevitably make this EP especially useful and appreciated around the globe. A solid release nonetheless with some highly recommended tracks.

Wie immer sehr aussergewöhnliche, aber mächtig schiebende Tracks auf Broque. "Impact" beginnt mit einem undefinierbaren Sample, das ich mal als "Sunshine" identifizieren würde und stürzt sich dann in ein tiefes Bassgrollen von Technofundamenten, die mit abenteuerlichen Effektschlieren immer deeper werden, "Function" ist eher minimal im Ansatz, aber auch geprägt von dieser über allem liegenden tiefen Melodiösität, die dennoch nicht in den Vordergrund will, sondern lieber den Track als Ganzes bestimmt, und auf "In Memory Of Violett" richtig zum tragen kommt, in einer hymnisch verknautschten Melodie, die den besten Momenten von Lawrence Konkurrenz macht. Ein Sägezahnmonster noch und ein abstrakt klingelnder Glöckchentrack, der manchen Sienkiewicz-Tracks nahe kommt. Broque rulet. www.broque.de

Review/ Max Cavallera: "The Bigger, The Better EP"
Sexy Slammings: Cavallera researches the border line between bone-dry minimalism and the two-fisted euphoria of Techno.
As I'm writing this, I'm enjoying my first cup of coffee this morning but it remains unclear whether the caffeine or the insistent beats of Max Cavalerra's „the bigger, the better ep“ on broque are giving me that decisive push beyond the borders of drowsiness. Cavalerra has been part of the label family since its inception, featuring on its wake-up-call-debut-compilation „10 Jahre oderaufbrot“ in 2004, releasing on a regular basis and catering both to the file- and Vinyl-factions.

While his friend Gabriel le Mar deepened his love for Dub on his recent Thinner full-length (still a hot recommendation for the warm season), Cavalerra is researching the border line between bone-dry minimalism and the two-fisted euphoria of Techno. A lot of praise has already been bestowed on „function“ - a track all but completely composed of a sweeping concrete-kickdrum, snapping hihats and a remorseless first-beat-bass-note, which sounds as though someone were slamming through a wall made of solid granit with a rubber-mallett right next to your ear while still trying to sound sexy. And truly: Cavalerra's mastery of infusing even the most spartanic instrumentation to arrive at a rich listening experience are on full display here, as he works towards a poignant acme where soft vocoder clouds and a short brass'esque crescendo create a sudden rush of adrenaline for a minute before lapsing back into the undiluted hypnotism of the groove. Having said that, there is quite a lot more to explore here: The way he fuses sensual, lush ambient electronica with straight-forward beats on „im memory of violett“, enhances dark-blooded Acid with the pulse of Detrot („1000ccm“ and „what the bell?!“) and fuses echo with energy on opener „impact“ are worthy of attentive and repeated listening.

Innumerable voices, including the likes of Laurent Garnier and Kanzleramt-founder Patrick Lindsey, have already expressed their admiration for this 5-track gem. Add mine to the list, please.
