Ajay disagrees with Shakespeare?
Although a lot of people who have read Shakespeare’s Othello feel that the lead character is a weak person for doubting his wife, Ajay Devgan, it seems, disagrees with this notion - or at least feels that the character he plays in Vishal Bharadwaj’s adaptation of Othello is far from weak. “Omi (or Omakara) is not a weak character. He does what he thinks is right according to him." Devgan further explains that Omkara doesn't believe unless and until proof is provided. Now whether this is because of Vishal’s adaptation or whether Othello was really a strong character, is debatable. Guess we’ll just have to wait and watch for the answer!

Ajay Hasn’t Watched Kajol’s ‘Fanaa’

Kajol keeps on chiding him as he still hasn't seen her power show in ‘Fanaa’. But Action Man Ajay Devgan has a lot on his plate right now. With ‘Golmaal’ on 14th July and ‘Omkaara’ on 28th July, this month may well belong to the master of understatement. And both the films are as different as chalk and cheese. Whereas ‘Golmaal’ is a fun caper of four wastrels, Vishal Bharadwaj’s ‘Omkaara’ (He plays the title role) is more intense and has rustic humor thrown in as well.

Ajay Devgan is an unlikely candidate for being a National Award winner, considering his father was a well known Fight Master. Having done a series of action films in the beginning of his career, Devgan Junior surprised everyone by his stellar performance in Mahesh Bhatt’s ‘Zakhm’ (He won his first Best Actor in National Awards). He repeated the feat with Raj Kumar Santoshi’s ‘The Legend of Bhagat Singh’. In ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ he surprised everyone by taking all the applause in spite of coming after the first half.

Today he may not be as big a star as the Khans, Bachchans or Roshans, but still an Ajay Devgan film is an event in itself. With daughter Nysa providing a lot of comic relief in real life, he has learnt to let himself go and stays away from doing too many films at the same time. There is a possibility that he may star with wife Kajol in a home production in the coming days, but as of now, Devgan is ready to shoot the gun at the bullish Box Office. This Othello’s life is far from tragic by any chance.

Comedy and crime - Ajay balances both with élan



The intense "Omkara" and the breezy "Golmaal"... Ajay Devgan's July releases could not be better timed with the actor, under attack for doing serious roles, saying that he is trying "hard not to create any image".

"I am not trying to create any image. I am trying to do different roles. I enjoy doing good work, that's all," Ajay told IANS over the phone from Mumbai.

Ajay, who says he is not trying to get into an image trap, is quite upbeat about his two forthcoming films.

In tone, temperament and genre both the movies are vastly different - "Omkara", based on "Shakespeare's "Othello", is poignant and intense while "Golmaal" is light and funny.

Ajay plays the title role in Vishal Bharadwaj's much-anticipated "Omkara", set in western Uttar Pradesh. He will be seen as a group leader who heads a gang of outlaws. Saif Ali Khan and Viveik Oberoi play his gang-mates and Kareena Kapoor is his love interest in the film.

Director Rohit Shetty's "Golmaal" is also a multi-starrer comedy starring, apart from Ajay, Arshad Warsi, Sharman Joshi, Tusshar Kapoor and Paresh Rawal.

"It's a fun film. It is all about four characters who have nothing to do in life. They just don't want to do anything in life - not even make money. But at the same time they don't harm anybody. They are very cute," said Ajay.

He clarified misconceptions that he plays a college student in the film. "I am not playing a college student. In fact, Sharman is a college student. He is studying medicine."

Although he has formed a reputation as an intense actor with films like "Company", "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam", "GangaaJal" and "Apaharan", Ajay is equally capable of handling comedy and "Golmaal" will prove it.

Earlier, the funny side of his personality came to the fore in films like "Major Saab" and "Ishq".

Asked about his expectations from the two releases, he said: "Both the films have shaped up very well and rest I leave to the audience because they are the best judge."

Ajay burnt his fingers as a producer by financing a box office dud like "Raju Chacha" and says 'no' to direction.

"I have produced films but I don't have any plans to direct a film. I am too busy with my acting assignments," said Ajay, who hasn't had time to see wife Kajol's comeback movie "Fanaa" with Aamir Khan.

"I wasn't in town when it was released. I haven't seen the film yet, so I can't comment on it."

"Golmaal" releases on July 14 and "Omkara" on July 28.

Ajay Devgan's short film on 26/7






Social activism seems the order of the day in Bollywood. Recently we saw actors Anupam Kher and Raveena Tandon turn journalists for CNN-IBN's Citizen Journalist campaign reporting about the areas affected by the monsoon fury.

Well the latest buzz regarding a similar issue like this is that Ajay Devgan is producing and editing a short film tentatively titled THE AWAKENING, directed by Faruque Kabir co-starring a child artiste, Anjaan Ali Khan. It is basically about a kid who has lost his parents in the traumatic 26/7 deluge last year and the pain that he goes through.

"Our message is to show that if a six-year old can learn from 26/7, why can't we elders be equally responsible? It could happen to not just Mumbai, but any city in India", Ajay was quoted by a news agency.

It's a three minute short film scheduled to release on 14th July.

Ajay's confidence in 'Golmaal'

Will GOLMAAL - FUN UNLIMITED go the PHIR HERA PHERI way? "I loved the film [GOLMAAL]," Ajay Devgan, who essays the main lead in the film, tells me, "It's very, very funny." GOLMAAL is Rohit Shetty's second directorial venture, after the moderately successful ZAMEEN [Ajay, Abhishek, Bipasha].

Was Rohit planning to play safe this time since comedy is the flavor of the season? "APAHARAN was not a comedy. RANG DE BASANTI, FANAA and KRRISH weren't laughathons either. At the end of the day, a good film works," the talented director states, "Comedy films depend on the equation an actor and director share. The director should be capable of extracting what he wants."

Rohit has also experimented with Ajay's image. The actor is synonymous with serious roles and has rarely attempted comedies [MASTI, HUM KISISE KUM NAHIN, ISHQ]. "We had decided to present him differently. In his last two films, APAHARAN and SHIKHAR, his role had serious shades, but his role in GOLMAAL is a complete contrast," Rohit adds.

Ajay Devgan fans caught trying his stunt

Bollywood's influence on the common man is quite a usual story, be it jumping walls or stunts with the bikes. On the recent list is the stunt performed by Ajay Devgan in his latest flick GOLMAAL - Fun Unlimited. The actor has performed the old PHOOL AUR KAANTE stunt in the movie, where he stands on two moving bikes. Incidentally we were informed that a group of young boys were caught performing the same stunt at Bandra, Carter Road, a suburb in Mumbai when the cops stopped them as it could have been fatal.

"I request my audiences not to try these stunts as they are performed with sheer practice and guidance," says worried Rohit Shetty, director GOLMAAL - Fun Unlimited.

The film is slated for release on July 14th and stars Ajay Devgan, Arshad Warsi, Sharman Joshi, Tusshar Kapoor, Rimmi Sen, Sushmita Mukherjee and Paresh Rawal in the lead roles.

Ajay Devgan-Kumar Mangat: Good Samaritans!
Producer Kumar Mangat may be Ajay's business associate, but the producer thinks filmmakers and stars need to look further than financial profits. And to put his money where his mouth is, he has even produced a small documentary which creates awareness about keeping one’s country clean. "I have visited various countries in the world, and I was amazed at their conscious efforts to keep their environment clean," informs Kumar Mangat. "And when I remembered how most of Mumbai, including Ajay and I were stuck on the roads during the deluge last year, I decided to do something about it. So I produced a film which creates such awareness. I will showcase it throughout the country; as such disasters can occur anywhere. Everyone needs to be aware about keeping their city clean." The film, starring Ajay Devgan and costing Rs 15 lakhs, will be screened at theatres all over the country. Here’s to the actor and filmmaker for making a difference to Mumbai and its neighbours!

Ajay and Rohit's common background!
One is a successful, intense actor, while the other is a budding director who started his directorial debut with Zameen. We are talking about Ajay Devgan and his friend-cum-director Rohit Shetty who made his second film, a comedy called Golmaal that released last week. But besides that they have other similarities too. "Both our fathers were action directors and friends. In fact, my father Shetty also acted with Amitabh Bachchan in Don. Remember the bald guy in Don with whom Amitabh fights in a van? That was my dad," says Rohit. Let's hope their common background will help them stay together and make better films!

Ajay Devgan The ´Hands-On´ Producer of ´Omkara´

Ajay Devgan was so impressed with the story of 'Omkara' that he was keen to produce it himself . Somehow that did not quite work out and the Vishal Bhardwaj project passed on to his long-time secretary , Kumar Mangat .
However , at the shooting of the film , Ajay Devgan was very much the hands-on producer , taking care of all the stars , discussing the schedule for the next day , briefing the unit members and generally offering his services to everyone in the cast and the crew .

Watching Devgan so concentrated about the production details during the making of 'Omkara' , it is difficult to imagine that he was , after all , only an actor on the sets !

Though very sketchy details are emerging about this project , we hear that Ajay-Kajol will once again be seen in a movie with a working title '50:50' . The project may be directed by Ajay's favourite Anees Bazmi but only next year .


As may be recalled UTV , who were initially reported by media as the producer of the above project have denied it totally . But that is not the end of the story and Kumar Mangat's name is now being mentioned as the new producer .

As we have said above , nothing concrete has been heard from any of the concerned people , except UTV and it is better to wait for the developments !
