AALIYAH TRIBUTE: INTERVIEWS WITH HER FANS
It’s been ten years since Aaliyah Dana Haughton tragically died in a plane crash. During Aaliyah’s seven-year career she recorded three albums that revolutionized the sound of R&B. In a music world dominated by divas like Mariah and Whitney showing of their vocal prowess, Aaliyah wasn’t afraid to let Timbaland’s beats steal the limelight with her soft, haunting vocals floating over them. Today, Aaliyah lives on through the hip hop infused R&B sounds of artists like Beyonce and Rihanna and the fans she inspired to follow their dreams.

Why are you an Aaliyah fan?

Sammy, 22, SammyBabygirl

She really proved a lot in her 22 years. She proved that you can go after your dreams and achieve them no matter what struggles you go through. Her voice is like no other. You don't have to scream when you sing, you can sing soft and beautiful and it be just as good as any other style of singing.
Lani, 13, @_lanilovesLiYAH
she's so humble, & she's a fantastic performer/singer/actress. She wasn't like most young singers, who wanted all the fame & the money. She deeply cared about her fans, & she related to them also.

Rebecca, 17, RChambers_

I'm a massive Aaliyah fan because although I've always listened to her mainstream hits like Try Again and More Than A Woman, I’d only become a die hard fan like two years ago when I just looked on her top songs on iTunes and quickly played We Need A Resolution and that’s when I got hooked. I bought all of her albums after that and watched all of her videos interviews, etc, on YouTube and it just made me become a bigger fan as she was so nice, funny and down to earth. That shows how good her music was that even though she has not released anything for ten years, had no appearances interviews to promote her music, people like me are still becoming die hard fans just through the quality of her music.

Danielle, @DanieMonique
Aaliyah was special because she was true to herself. She embraced who she was and never tried to be anyone else. She never compromised her values to live her dream. For Aaliyah it was all about the art. She lived for it and you could tell in everything she did.

Nnenna, 24, @Nennypenny
Her voice was so soft and unique and she made young people like me really appreciate R&B. She had songs that applied to different situations in a girl’s life and you could really identify with her. Her music is legendary and I know I’ll be singing her songs well into old age!

How has Aaliyah influenced your life? How has she inspired you, or what did you learn from her?

Daniel, 21, @ThisIsRosewood
Aaliyah ultimately has taught me to be a genuine person. I learned from her that you should always strive to be kind and always maintain your dignity and class, and to maintain your respect for yourself and for others. She is the kind of person that I want to be like, the one that everyone is drawn to because of that humbled, beautiful soul.

Sammy, 22, SammyBabygirl
She inspires me to go after my dreams. Because of the work I saw her put into her own career, I do the same. I am a singer/songwriter, and I work very hard on my music, even though I'm not famous or don't make any money off of it. I do it because music is what I love.

Miya, 25
Aaliyah inspired me to always have a positive attitude and always be humble and have a good spirit and don't feed into negatively what I learned from her is to always be myself no matter what. And you can be sexy without being revealing.

Rebecca, 17, RChambers_
She has shown me that even though you get knocked back and every little thing seems to be against you it is possible to keep going through things. She also showed women how you can be classed as one of the world’s most beautiful women while still keeping your clothes on.

MaBinti, 23, @beebsta1988
She taught young black girls like myself that you can be strong, ambitious and even provocative without being classless. She never resorted to hyper-sexual gimmicks. She never prescribed to the diva archetype and she never sold out either. Aaliyah always exuded grace and sophistication. Whether it was reflected in her singing or public persona, she always handled everything with class.

Danielle, @DanieMonique
Aaliyah had a beautiful spirit and was a beautiful person inside & out. She was a kind person and never carried herself like a diva. She always cared about those around her. In pursuit of my own music career I have ran in to people who have known her personally and I always heard the same thing. … This industry is a hard one, but I just keep remembering that if Aaliyah could stay true to herself and still realize her dreams then I can too. In that way she has inspired me to never give up. Aaliyah showed me that the most important thing was the creation of the art itself. It's not about how many records you sell or how much money you make. It's about staying true to yourself and creating something that can impact others and that you can be proud of.

Sasha, 18, @Sasha650
Aaliyah pushed me in the direction of a musical career. She gave me the mentality that if she can get up there and perform in front of all these people, then so can I. I learned from her that we can get anything that we want if we work hard enough for it. If God gave us a talent, then we should go for it.

Detria, 21, @detErMiNaTE_iam
Aaliyah inspired me because she taught me [to] distinguish of being sexy and being beautiful. Her distinctive appearances taught me that you don't always have to dress sexy to feel beautiful. If you know you’re sexy and embrace it, it can be a very beautiful thing.

Adriana (producer name: Freestyla), 24 years old, @TheBeatGuuurl
She is definitely my favorite singer. I'm 24 years old, so I grew up listening to her. When I was younger, I could listen to her, Timbaland, Missy, Playa and the whole clique all day. Thanks to them, I realized I wanted to make music. That's why I started producing beats. I love her style and personality, her approach to music, and overall, life. The "street but sweet" thing. She was a very sweet and good girl singing over very hard beats.

Matt, 17, @snickgordon

Aaliyah has influenced my life in so many ways. For one, she's taught me it's OK to strive to be different, and it's OK to be myself. This is my fave quote of hers "I stay true to myself and my style, and I am always pushing myself to be aware of that and be original. " She also is one of the few people who inspired me to want to be in the music industry.

Have you done anything special or interesting to honour Aaliyah?

Danielle, @DanieMonique
I have visited Aaliyah's resting place on a few occasions, but my favorite tribute to her is the portrait my father-in-law drew for me as a birthday gift one year (pictured left).

Sammy, 22, SammyBabygirl
I was an active member of aaliyah.com's forum, I help run the AaliyahHaughton twitter page, and I write her a letter every year for the vigils the fans put together. I also traveled to New York in 2007 to visit her place of rest and I also read her a letter and participated in the fan vigil.

Rebecca, 17, RChambers_
I made a tribute video because when I heard I Was Here by Beyoncé off her new album 4, the minute I heard it all i could think about was Aaliyah and the fact that she achieved so much in such a short time and that she shall always be remembered which is what the message of the song was. Tribute video

Adriana (producer name: Freestyla), 24 years old, @TheBeatGuuurl

I've released two remixes of her songs through all these years. The first one was in 2006, Rock The Boat, remix that was used on a dance routine for the most important dance TV show here, Fama. The other remix is We Need A Resolution. Both included on my remix compilation called, A Song Ain't A Song Withtout A Remix. For her 10th anniversary, I'm also releasing a mix of her whole catalogue, so everybody, from young people to older ones keep enjoying her beautiful voice. One In A Million remix.
What do you think Aaliyah’s legacy is on the music world? What was her biggest impact on music?

Daniel, 21, @ThisIsRosewood
Aaliyah's legacy on music is far greater than anyone has ever given her credit for. She was only on the scene for seven years, but the cultural impact she had while she was here plus the impact she left behind continues to stand to this day. Only in recent years have artists (especially female artists) began to experiment in other genres and mixing their style to create something edgy and new. From Rihanna and videos like Disturbia to Beyonce and Sweet Dreams, Aaliyah's influence is still very much apparent.

Miya, 25:
Aaliyah is the princess of hip hop and R&B because her music was different from what all the other R&B singers were doing in the 90s. Her style was different as well as [was] her music. She was a trendsetter. Her sound was unique and she was a force to be reckoned with.

Rebecca, 17, RChambers_
Her biggest impact upon music is changing the face of R&B as we know it because before Aaliyah there was nobody doing what she done, i.e. hard hip hop beats with soft vocals, now its all over the radio.

Matt, 17, @snickgordon
She proved that you can stay true to yourself and still be successful. Her biggest impact on music was in R&B, and in style.

@Aamahd, 22.

Her legacy is her fearlessness with regard to her artistry. She was a risk-taker. There is a marked difference in all three of her albums, not just in sound, but also in her vocals. She is responsible for the most forward-thinking, genre-bending music of the late 90s and early 00s. Prior to One in a Million, you wouldn’t hear any hip hop influenced R&B record. She changed the game again with Aaliyah with its fusion of rock, hip-hop and neo-soul that still sounds as current today as it did at its release ten years ago. There really hasn’t been anything quite like it.

MaBinti, 23, @beebsta1988
Aaliyah's legacy is immense but most people don't get how important Aaliyah was for popular music. People may talk about her groundbreaking work with Timbaland and Missy or they'll talk about her style but Aaliyah was much more than a muse to two of the greatest minds in popular music. She was the 21st Century prototype for a more sophisticated and cooler brand of popular music--attractive, sleek and edgy…Aaliyah had posture of a jazz singer but the independence, fearlessness, darker sensibilities of indie or punk rocker. Aaliyah was a rock star fronting as R&B singer.

Danielle, @DanieMonique
Aaliyah's biggest impact was her style. I see it in a lot of artists today. Some people get upset because they like to say that these artists are copying her or trying to be like her, but I see it as her being remembered and never forgotten. They are influenced and inspired by her, but they still have their own flavor to bring to the table.
TJ Hobson, 17, musicsince_1994
I think Aaliyah's biggest impact on the music world was her album One In A Million. That album was iconic in the 90's and changed the face of R&B. It is by far my favorite Aaliyah album. Her legacy on the music world was that she was forever changing. She wasn’t scared to step outside the box and be different and it always worked.

Nnenna, 24, @Nennypenny
Aaliyah was an era of music. She was one of the younger generations who brought R&B to the forefront and mainstream. Her music is classic. It’s R&B history. She was part of a time where music really had meaning and depth. I really feel like if she were alive today, R&B would not be fading into the background as it is now. There hasn’t been a classic R&B album by a female since Aaliyah.

What will you be doing on August 25th to celebrate or remember Aaliyah?

Daniel, 21, @ThisIsRosewood
I will be watching the special on BET titled Aaliyah: One In A Million and I will probably play her music all day long. I will light a candle at 3:45 PST and again at 6:45 PST in respect to Aaliyah and all who passed in the plane crash. Aaliyah will always be a "positive, motivating force within my life" and I believe that by striving to be a better person everyday of my life, I will constantly be paying tribute to her.

Miya, 25:
I will be rocking my Aaliyah t-shirt I have made and listening to all her music all day long.

Lani, 13, @_lanilovesLiYAH
I will be watching all of the Aaliyah tributes. Playing her music all day. Watch[ing] all of her videos/interviews/performances. [And] of course, shed some tears, but at the same time I will smile and know that our Baby girl is in a better place.

@Aamahd, 22.
Like every other year, I’ll be listening to her albums, watching her videos and posting articles to Twitter and engaging with other Aaliyah fans. I’ll also be making sure that Aaliyah becomes a trending topic on Twitter.

MaBinti, 23, @beebsta1988

Generally, I just play her last album but this time, my show DMV Live Radio, is doing a special Aaliyah tribute on August 26. We'll be having guest call in and playing some remixes/remakes on our show as well as play some of her music. We broadcast every Friday at 7pm.

The last word…

Sammy, 22, SammyBabygirl
She was such an amazing woman, so strong, but also so pure and delicate. She is a great person for young girls to look up to and really everyone should look up to her. She knew what she wanted and didn't stop until she got it.

Danielle, @DanieMonique
If Aaliyah was still here I would have loved the opportunity to thank her for inspiring me and for showing the world that it's OK to be yourself. She will always be in my heart and forever be remembered. Aaliyah was more than a singer, more than a dancer, more than an actress. She was more than a woman. She was exactly what she wanted to be remembered for, a full-on entertainer who touched so many lives and hearts with her beautiful spirit. We love you and miss you always Baby girl!
